Dr. Stevens is the absolute best. She is the most caring, patient professor I have ever had. She is full of wisdom, especially in the field of education. If you're not willing to do the work to become an educator: do not take this class or major in education. Dr. Stevens will prepare you for life as a teacher. I even go to her office just to chat.

Comment:

She was my assigned advisor and in our one and only meeting, she insisted that I teach English, despite my desire to teach History. She refused to sign off on my schedule unless I changed my mind. Thankfully I could drop the English class and enroll in a West Civ class to meet my needs. After that, she never spoke to me again. Some advisor!

Dr. Stevens has extremely high expectations for her undergrads, but that is to be expected! Her work load can be overwhelming but she is very clear about what she wants. Follow her guidelines and you WILL be successful in her class. If you VALUE your education and want to be a successful teacher, take her class.

This is the most difficult and boring class I have ever taken. The amount of work is debilitating, and you will take 10 pages of notes a class. The tests are simple recall over ANY topic covered in the course. She does not give assistance and her only advice is to study. I would not have continued in my masters program if she was my first prof.

She is a great teacher. Get to work in the lab with kids. She is extremely helpful & will always meet with you in her office for questions & advice. She holds very high expectations so make sure you go to class and do your best. You will know how to teach kids at the end of her class.

While Dr Stevens is a tough teacher she is fair. She always offers help and is extremely kind and understanding. I love her class

Comment:

Provides lots of handouts; howvever, she is not aware that students are parents, spouses, and employees. The amount of work that is given is a bit much. Lecture notes are written on the board. You are expected to write 10 page lesson plans along with other projects.

By the way Stevens teaches, you would guess she hasn't been in an elementary classroom in at least 10 years. She models the exact opposite of "best practice." Almost half of the class is spent copying notes she writes on the board, and lesson plans are expected to be 10-12 pages each! She's the only grad. teacher I know of that gives tests.

In a teacher education program there is no room for a professor that is close minded and one sided. From the moment she threatens to "get ya" if you take any ideas or lessons from the internet to the unfounded degradations of her least favorite students. Her presence at AU is not an asset to their education program.

She has high expectations, but if you are willing to work hard, you can meet those expectations. Your money is well spent for her courses. You learn more than from most teachers. Due to her high expectations, she comes across as intimidating, but she is very approachable and the work load becomes manageable, if you will put in the effort.
