Comment:
Took Professor Hughes for a tutorial on greek tragedy. I would definitely recommend it, he has a snarky sense of humour, but definitely cares a lot about his students. The class in itself wasn't hard, if you put in effort, you will do well.

Comment:
the Hughes method is basically: no HW, just quizzestests. Seems cool, until you realize that you NEED to be reviewing A LOT. So if you're not good at giving yourself lots of self-directed studying you're screwed. He goes off on pointless tangents in class, is unhelpful to struggling students and will make sarcastic comments about your mistakes.

At first he seemed very boring and stiff, but as the course moves on, you start to appreciate his snarky humor. Cares for his students and is passionate about his subject. Its a tough course that takes a lot of effort, but if you are willing to work, its a class worth taking.

I was thrilled to take Intro Greek, but I started struggling almost immediately with the massive amounts of homework and a quiz every Monday. Very poor explanation of concepts, and when I went to see him about getting help, his advice was "study harder." His cutting remarks on my tests were the final straw. Dropping the class was the right choice.

I didn't learn anything in particular, all you do is go around the class translating the text. There is no analytical component to the class. If he doesn't like you, watch out.

Assumes that you're doing your best, and works to fix the problems in your understanding. I think there was a lot of not doing the work well enough which caused errors which caused the class to be slowed down and the same small amount of work to be assigned. Still a good teacher if you are engaged and work hard. You get out what you put in.

The class itself is absurdly dense, but he often takes student input when considering assignments. Incredibly snarky and seems to enjoy beating up on students with comments on exams, but he knows his subject to the T. 3 hours of work every night and take his words with a grain of salt and you will love him.

Amazing prof...more than a bit snarky, but most of his comments are humorous. He obviously knows his material, and as another poster said, he's great at explaining etymology and why the language is the way it is. Manages to develop a certain amount of rapport with students and manages to prevent a subject as dead as Ancient Greek from being boring

Comment:
Hughes was a pretty spaced out teacher. The class was discussion-based, which meant a lot of it was just listening to kids saying stupid stuff. He was very lax about paper topics and due dates. It was also very easy to get him to let us leave early. He is funny at times. He seems to grade papers based more on the quality of writing than the content

Good at explaining what we're reading, and brings a lot of etymology into the class, comparing Latin to Greek, etc.- I've learned so much about /why/ Latin is like it is, it's really awesome. Fun sense of humor, fair with students, lets us help detemine what assignments will be, and such. Good class with him.

Comment:
Overall, a dull professor. He, at first, told us just to lead all the discussion and then he told us to all agree on a topic for a paper and then pick a date that it should be due. Doesn't really teach. I'd rather him just tell us he doesn't teach and let us study the material on our own. VERY subjective grader paperwise.

Expect to put in a lot of time memorizing forms and vocab, which eats up a TON of your time. class moves very quickly, could easily get behind if you take a few nights off. Don't take any "mean" comments on your tests too seriously. Very quotable, funny prof. Tangents make class worth attending.

Runs his intro hum class on discussions. If you take the two hour block schedule, expect to valiantly struggle against sleep. Has an underappreciated sense of humor.

His classes contained very clear, complete explanations, and his knowledge of the Greek language is phenomenal. Has a very dry sense of humor. Can be a bit of a jerk sometimes.

This course was so deadening. A morning class that put me to sleep. Also, 5 days a week, studying 2 hours every night--still not enough. Must be very dedicated for this class.

Prone to holding up class with tangents. Speaking style conducive to daydreaming, but has good rapport. Great textbook, and weekly quizzes hold students accountable.
