Comment:
I took two classes with Dr. Emily Gaul. Both were worth taking. I still remember most of the stuff I was taught in her class. We studied, made experiments in class, given some of the most useful information on artists' materials, had guest lecturers, presentations. She was generous, thoughtful, knew how to help everyone. Best!

Do not take Chemistry of Photo if you don't have to. Dr. Emily is disorganized and scattered. She is thorough but at the same time does not explain things well, if that can even make sense. It's not an extremely hard class, but it's a frustrating one. Half way through the semester we haven't even processed any film.

She knows her stuff but can't teach to save her life. I wanted this chemistry of textiles class to be relative to my major (fashion) but a lot of the lectures had little or nothing to do with the lab or textiles in general. Everything that's been said is 100% correct.

Awful. I hate saying this because she is nice and wants her students to learn. Many digressions, lots of info that isn't needed, but is given anyway thus making everything irrelevant and confusing. The order of lectures is weird. Extra credit is given WAY too much, instead of just meaningful assignments. I would not recommend taking this course.

I took her science and perception course. WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS WOMAN. Grading scale makes no sense whatsoever. Goes on tantrums. Biggest waste of time and money. I feel robbed.

all the other bad reviews are still relevant. i was dying to take this class because it sounded so interesting and informative. not when taught by dr. gaul. but if you're into 3-hour lectures and lots of book regurgitation, go for it.

This class was so frustrating. Was very excited to learn college level science and instead it was more like fourth grade science. She was a very sweet woman and fun to talk to, but her labs were unorganized, a little confusing and her grading system made no sense.

Emily is very nice, but not the greatest professor. Her grading scale is completely illogical: every single assignment and quiz is worth 100 points, so a 2 page essay is worth the same as a one-question quiz...better not screw up that question. Labs are sparse and elementary, and most of the class time is allotted to long, boring lectures.

I'm really regretting having taken her Sensation and Perception class. I really don't feel like I'm learning that much and it's just a waste of time. She's unorganized and her grading system is really strange.

I can't believe she is still teaching! She is awful! The most confusing and disorganized teacher I have ever had. It cracks me up that she has crappy ratings from 4 yrs ago, yet she is still teaching, and changing the syllabus every week. The class is interesting and extremely useful for apparel retail majors, and it is almost not worth the hassle.

I found Dr. E to be a very sweet caring woman, who is passionate about her subject. She is incredibly smart and truly knows her subject. She gives quizzes often and lots of homework - she is an easy grader and as long as you do your stuff you will pass with flying colors. Paying attention in class is essential or you'll be as lost

She's a really, really sweet woman and really does seem to know what she's talking about. It's just that, well... she doesn't know how to convey this information in a way that won't make you feel like you're in elementary school. Very easy class with interesting subject matter, but her inability is a huge turnoff.

The other reviews sum this up pretty well. Emily is a nice person, but she cannot explaim a damned thing to save her life. I'm not sure why she is still employed at Columbia. She has the scientific knowledge not the teaching skills that it takes to get ideas across. And her classes are not planned at all. It's really irritating.

the teacher is spacey & i feel bad for her bc she has a phd and knows a lot but most of its too confusing for non-science types. the class is very easy and somewhat interesting/useful; for example you make cyanotypes and learn the chemical aspects of development. on the whole, a bit too disorganized

I agree with the other review, this class is a waste of time. It had the potential to be good, but the teacher is so scatter brained that it makes it very difficult to learn anything at all. While Emily is a very nice person, she needs to stop changing the syllabus mid semester.

This may sound like a very interesting and beneficial class... but its not. The teacher was awful; it was a complete waste of time. She barely knew what was going on, and we did not learn a thing. I felt like I was in first grade science the whole time.
