I took his class and have TA'd for him. He is a great teacher in his own way. Students get what they want out of his class: If you do the work to learn, and not just to do it, you will make leaps. He is a great resource for print and typography, so be sure to ask questions! That's the biggest rift that I saw: Students don't ask enough questions!

I liked Franz's class better than any other professors. His assignments are fun and challenging. He gives good feedback and unlike other teachers, he tries to get to know the students in person as well.

Franz appreciates design (International Typographic Style) however he doesn't teach in the traditional sense. Most of the class time is spent doing homework.

Comment:

Franz is a sweetheart and I have tremendous respect for him as a person. But he gives hardly any feedback and I really learned nothing from him. Each class is filled with one on one critiques which is unfortunate because I would have learned more from my fellow students than I did from him.

kind of smarmy. a very traditional swiss background. we had only two full class crits. all other crits were one on one, which was hard because seeing other people's work lends a competitive edge esp. in a school environment. the projects are a little more generic/portfolio-y. there are fieldtrips as well.

I do not recommend this professor at all. He did not give clear assignment, bit he did not care is you did any work or not. I felt like I was back in kindergarden. He would start class LATE, then he would leave and never return. What was the point in taking this class??

I found him to be disinterested. He would start a class then leave and never return. It was like he just did not care about the students or the class. He yawned before he left us. Assignments were as lame as the instruction.

The class that I took was very free form, he gave you assignments and let you go on your own, but we met everyday to critique. He gives very good advice, and he's a very nice person. He is a very knowledgable person and I recommend him highly.

he's sucks! he doesn't teach, and he doesn't come over to help or talk to you about your work. he's out of the comp. lab for over 60% of class time. he's boring, irresponsible and lazy. had a bad impression of him the first time i met him.
