Professor Johnson is a kind old man, but difficult to understand the material. Attendance is not taken, but it matters that you attend because the material is explained. Each student is required to present a problem for grade participation. Notebook checks happen bf Midterm and on the day of the final. The midterm and final are problems from class.

2 Exams Midterm & Final are the only grades. He doesn't require attendance but if you miss class you wont know the material. he uses socratic method of teaching he takes note of participation.(participate in class) He makes you really think about answering a question, He will NOT give you a straight answer. He also has notebook check.

Students teach other students with no clear direction as to if they are right or wrong. Grades are from two exams and a notebook all of which are graded after drop date. Do not ask him about a grade because he will not tell you and does not use blackboard. To pass you MUST go up to the board at least once and even more if you want an A.

Professor Johnson is essentially present as a guide and you are expected to use critical thinking skills to solve problem sets that were provided... if you do not participate or have a good respectful attitude you WILL FAIL.

Awful. It seems like an easy class and there's no mandatory attendance, but he does not teach the course at all, explains nothing, and your grade depends only on the midterm and final. You never really know whether you'll pass or fail until the very end. He requires a journal, but I doubt he bothers to even flip through it.

Awful class. You have no idea where you stand in the class until it's on your transcript. DO NOT TAKE if you can avoid it. He doesn't teach, tells you not to go to a tutor. It was more of a debate class than a math class

As far as a person, he was a sweet man. However, as a professor he was just not good at all. The syllabus was extremely unclear, he actually refuses to tell us where we stand in the class (so how should we know to drop or not??), he doesn't use blackboard, and generally the class gave me giant anxiety attacks. I had to take for core credit...

Got an A but not recommending for people taking Comp Sci. Take him if you major in Math. This is Discrete Math class but we ended up talking about the number system and methodology for proof. To get an A, come to the board as much as you can, and visit his office to show your effort. No textbook required.

He will give 1 or 2 short speeches at the beginning but then doesn't teach for rest of semester. Lots of self-learning, and teaching done by classmates. Class style uses Socratic method. Class participation is important or you won't pass. Few exams but worth large grade percentage. Must have solid grasp of material. Be prepared to think hard.

Absolutely awesome! Polarizes the class though, since most people won't enjoy having to think for themselves. As Don Marquis said, "If you make people think they're thinking, they'll love you; but if you really make them think, they'll hate you". Dr. Johnson class changed my entire view on learning. I am now pursuing mathematics professionally.

There is only one major grade in this class: the final! Do not take if you are not skilled in Geometry, or if you do not have patience. This class is really difficult because he does not give out any answers to the homework problems and leaves the students to figure out and explain the answers in class. Good luck!

This class is all about practical CREATIVE THINKING applied in probability. Dr. Johnson uses the Moore Method of teaching/learning - he's featured on the wikipedia page! Great teacher - my whole approach towards learning new subjects has been shifted since I took his class. He prepared me fundamentally to step into a career that I truly enjoy.

He does not teach probability. He doesn't really teach at all. He only went up to the board to give a 20 min lecture 3 times out of the whole semester.

He is a great teacher. I really love the IBL teaching style because it encourages students to think for themselves and also the emphasis on student participation makes you feel like he actually care what THE STUDENTS think about the topic (rare in a math classroom). Plus, we laugh and have a lot of fun in his class!

Prof Johnson is the best professor I have had thus far. He uses the Socratic method and encourages students to think for themselves and not just memorize information without understanding it. If you just want to memorize info and regurgitate it back without understanding it, you might not want to take Prof. Johnson's courses.
