Comment:
This class is very time consuming. There's a lot of material to digest, but it's very rewarding if field geology is your thing. Be prepared to work very hard, and then some. She respects and rewards hard, honest work. Office hours are essential when writing the final papers (which are many). Overall a very memorable and rewarding class.

Hilde really cares for her students & makes her lectures entertaining yet thorough. She has the perfect sense of humor you'd want in a teacher, but she also means business. You'll definitely learn a lot if you take her dinosaur class, though the tests can be confusing -- if you put in the effort, you will do fine!

Comment:
Her lectures usually run long- she likes to talk. But she's exceedingly thorough on the subject matter and doesn't miss many things. That also means her exams are SO broad in the material they cover. Study even the most innocuous things, because they might be on there.

Hilde is an amazing professor. If you are interested in learning more about dinosaurs, definitely take this course. It isn't what you'd expect (it's more scientific than 'cool facts'), but it's rewarding. She makes you work for an A -- one midterm, final, and project. Also something cool is that she has participated in several excavations!

Geeky funny, the closer she becomes to being a fossil the more she likes them. Can be supportive and will also just walk away mid-conversation if she's bored, doesn't wait for people, will reward you for good work but also be really harsh, even mean. I still have no idea if she likes or hates me. GOT TO OFFICE HOURS, trips are mandatory of course!

Hilde is hard core, but she's that way for a reason. Summer field may kick your ass, but if you can do well, it's well worth it to have Hilde in your corner. Try not to give her attitude. She forgets NOTHING!! Don't procrastinate in her classes, it will be your downfall.

She's an awesome person, funny sense of humor. but this class is devastatingly hard, especially for it being a GE course. Her finals will ruin you!

I absolutely loved this woman, she had a quirky sense of humor and she managed to make every class really interesting. I now appreciate dinosaurs a lot more than I used to. Ankylosaurs are the best.

Hilde is a hero. Her 109 class is challenging, but do able and is the ultimate preporation for summer field aka 188A. 188A is raw, in the field by 7 am, quiet by 10 pm, but the class changes lives. If you did 109 the work load of 188 is about 4 or 5 times as much, but all you do is geo for 4.5 wks so... Take Hilde's classes, and go to the rvr n 188

Hilde's a sweet lady with a lot of knowledge. My only complaints would be that the text was completely useless unless youre already a paleontologist and that she sometimes was difficult to hear and understand. She would say one thing then contradict it the next day but that didn't happen often. I would consider taking another class with her.

Hilde is an AWESOME teacher. Her lectures are engaging, funny and packed with information. The class is hard but I would definitely recommend taking it - only take it P/F if you can. The material is awesome and her lectures are always full - not because attendance is required but because everyone WANTS to be there every day. TAKE THIS CLASS.

Very willing to work with students. Very hard class but she is amazing. She is very helpful and knows how to make students want to learn. She loves her work and enjoys teaching. She is excited about what she does and if you are excited about it you will learn a lot. The class is very hard but her work is not unreasonable. Huge time commitment.

Hilde was the best teacher I've had at UCSC. She explains things very well and is extremely enthusiastic about the subject. The New Idria project was both the most difficult, but most fun assignment I've had in college. Take 109 with Hilde!!

Funny teacher. Entertaining and interesting lectures. A lot more about fossil discovery and a lot of memorization. Hard tests. Really detailed. Not an easy GE.

Best teacher i've experienced at UCSC. She's funny, awesome music tastes, and very intelligent. She expects the most, but easily facilitates her expectations with interesting lectures as well as trippy demos. Highly recommended if you like dinos. Tests are all off of her lectures. I never read the book and got an A
