Genetics is tough and Dr. deBanzie expects students to put in a lot of effort to learn it. He has TONS of material available online. This includes practice problems, tutorials, and external links to help you work through the concepts from lecture. It is not an "easy" class, but it is one where you can learn a lot.

He can be helpful when directly asked to be. However, all he supplies you with is the notes you take in class, which almost never make sense, and whatever is on his website, which is little to no help. He never explains how to do the questions he asks on homework or tests. Im the student that doesnt ask for help but youll need to to pass.

Dr. de Banzie is my favorite professor I've ever had at NSU. He makes you work for the grade, but it is so rewarding. He's got to be the nicest guy at this whole school. Very helpful in his office hours and gives review days before exams. Tests and homework are concept based, not on brute memorization. All class material is posted online.

Dr. de Banzie is my favorite professor for sure. His tests are hard, but all the info is given in lectures. Seriously though, if you don't study, you will fail. He makes sure you know what you're talking about, and in detail. Definitely worth taking, because you will know so much when you finish his course.

I'm an A and B student GPA 3.7 biology major. Had many pre-med friends in this class with me. Everyone I know made C's and D's. He gave us new material up until Wednesday and tested us on Friday, the final was 40% of our grade, didn't review homework or tests, no extra credit, and no direction. This class will consume every moment you have! Run!

I had Dr. DeBanzie for both genetics and developmental biology. His classes are not easy As; he will make you learn and earn your grade. He is a great professor, and I have learned so much from his courses. If you are serious about getting a solid biology education then definitely take his courses.

Comment:

The class was difficult, as it's a biology FOR majors, but he made me enjoy it. I actively wanted to put work into his class. He breaks down what he's teaching into the very easiest to understand terms, and his Scottish accent makes lectures fun. He seriously knows what he's talking about, and he just wants to help you learn as much as possible.

Dr. De Banzie made the lectures as interesting as he could considering it was an Evolution and Diversity class. It was my second time taking the class (first time with a different professor that I ended up dropping), and I enjoyed it. I had to work for my grade because it was only four tests over the lectures with no other points.

This is definitely an instructor who knows his material and is more than willing to help the students understand the material! I cannot emphasize enough how much studying you will have to do in order to pass his tests (memorize every detail of notes and diagrams). However, he keeps discussions interesting and I would highly recommend him.

De Banzie is a great teacher. I was really dreading this class, but he explains everything really well and goes out of his way to help students. His tests are really in-depth though. You absolutely have to study to pass.

I love Dr. de Banzie. I took genetics with him and it was one of the hardest classes I've had. He has great knowledge in the topic and if you come by his office he will be happy to help you. The exams are all based on lecture notes and diagrams and you need to understand them very well if you want to get an A or a B in the class.

Very Very HARD.He writes fragmented sentences on the board so when you go back to review your notes, you have no idea what they mean. You end up having to know genetics inside and out if you want to ace his tests. He puts questions on the test that were never covered. Take somebody else if at all possible.

I enjoyed him as a professor. He is so well organized that he doesn't even use a textbook. He is very willing to help you understand if you see him during his office hours. During the lab reports I practically lived there but ended up understanding and making good grades on them. His class was very difficult though, so don't plan on taking him unless you are interested in actually learning a lot.

He is definitely used to teaching upper level classes opposed to gen ed classes. If you are not majoring in a science class and don't care about biology you do not need to take him. He loves biology you can tell. He jumps around with topics and doesn't use the book. I wouldn't recommend if you don't like science. Not an easy class at all.

Dr. de Banzie is a good professor. You MUST go to class and take notes if you want to do well in his class. He covers a lot of material and the test are very difficult. I studied religiously and managed an A on all the exams. The lab reports are what brought my grade down. They are very time consuming and extremely difficult.

Everyone expects class to be a cake walk. They also expect the professor to teach for the test. De Banzie does not follow this idea and teaches to educate. I appreciated that. He can be short sometimes in if he is busy which I was almost taken back by. However a friend reassured me it wasn't a big deal. Nice guy.

I took every class offered by Dr. deBanzie. He was very challenging, but so concise and organized that the textbook was not needed. He is one of the absolute best teachers of complex biological concepts you will ever meet. I am incredibly blessed to have had the privelege of his teaching. Now a practicing MD, still benefiting from his teaching.
