Comment:
He just talks about his own ideas and his own books and wants you to cite his books. He is nice but his grading is sketchy. Just hope he happens to like you and not like others in the class.

He is a phenomenal professor and will change the way you look at the OT. He can be hard but as long as you do the work you'll get a good grade. Certainly has some interesting opinions and is firm on what he believes but also clear that you don't have to agree with him. Great rapport with students!!! He is well respected and I learned so much!

He is the most innocent 95 year relic I've ever known. He has excellent speaking patterns and understands how to communicate to students. His grading criterion is the most vague I've ever seen, and all of his sources cite themselves. If you want to hear some interpretations of the bible that you have never heard before, take his class.

If you like classes that are mainly lecture, he's the man for you. My main complaint was that he left controversial topics too open-ended that I personally think the Bible is clear on. However, he did teach a comprehensive, inspiring overview of the OT. (Bonus--he'll have you over for dinner). He is a fine choice for OT--but perhaps not the best.

You need to write papers using his own sources and write what he wants to hear. He is very nice and cares about the students. He is good about answering questions, but his gives very one sided lectures.

Grading criteria were extremely vague, and feedback given on projects was cynical and rude at times. Valuable lecture content was often lost in the frustrations of trying to figure out what mattered.

Dr. Walton is incredibly bright and a leading figure in the origins debate. He's really kind and genuine, but somewhat hard to approach. The tests are all reasonable, but he is a difficult grader on the essays. Make sure to use the sources he gives you... and write what he wants to hear.

Unbelievable! So good. Walton opened my eyes to the Old Testament. A lot of people will tell you his philosophy is wrong, but that's because his teaching style can come off pretty arrogant. But his philosophy on scripture truly saved how I read the Bible, and I encourage you to give it a look. Calling him wrong is like denying Gandalf, imho.

I have never learned so much in a class. He is very intelligent and very interesting. This was one of my best classes and best professors. It is difficult though. There is a lot of busy work and his grading is difficult. Be prepared to hear some crazy and controversial ideas. Great professor though.

He is very knowledgeable, which makes for ok lectures. But he is pretty arrogant, and his sense of humor is probably more appealing to middle schoolers rather than college students. Lots of busy work (which he even calls busy work), a lot of memorization of somewhat insignificant facts. I'd take someone else

Smart man, but very arrogant. Good lecturer, doesn't like to be challenged in class and he has strange/wrong ideas that need clarification. The amount of HW is insane and not graded well by his TA. I was excited to take an OT class but found it's a class about his ideas and not on what the OT says.Take this class w/ someone else and save your GPA!

Extraordinarily smart man who will change the way you view the Old Testament. Content can be dry, and grading is difficult. If I were to choose again, I'd go with someone else.

Understanding the mindset of those who lived in the ancient Near East is incredibly helpful in biblical interpretation. There probably isn't a better scholar under whom a student could study these things in the United States.

ANE: difficult and brilliant. GEN: independant. Extremely atomistic, basically a classic historical-critic. Not interested in synthetic biblical theology. Very, very helpful thoughts on how to bring ANE to bear on texts. Very good Hebrew scholar. Controversial biblical theology.
