This man so passionate about this material that he completely forgot how to organize a class. It is unclear when assignments are due because most of the time, he's not aligned with the syllabus. His quizzes are just sentences copied from the textbook, so I recommend downloading the digital version if you are so destined to take this class.

Exams are tricky because they are so heavily based on textbook material and he doesn't go over a lot in class. Some exam questions are literally copied text from the textbook with a fill in the blank. The extra credit he offers helps, but some of it you have to be in class for to do or even hear about. Good attendance + reading pass.

Definitely a nice and knowledgeable guy, but this class is terribly disorganized. Not only were the TAs very elusive, but Prof. Hester didn't previously inform us of his strange testing format until the day of the midterm. Not a difficult class, but don't go in thinking you won't have to do any work. Make sure you go to lectures for extra credit.

While he is very interesting and knowledgeable about Jazz, I can say that without a doubt this is the least organized class I have ever taken. You are at a complete loss as to know when hw is due. The hw is also torn out of your textbook - making it impossible to sell back. (he doesn't allow photocopies). The midterm was ridiculous and complete bs.

Difficult to understand, all over the place. VERY passionate about the subject but the material is presented in a really unclear manner. Read the textbook and you should be alright.

WASTE OF TIME. This class is pretty hard for a music class. He does not even reply to his email regarding grade reviews. Sending the music surveys that he wrote to other professors was embarrassing because they felt that it was lacking. Take a diff. music course.

If you are actually interested in the topics this guy teaches you will not be disappointed. It is immediately evident how much he cares, knows, and wants to share these subjects. Couldn't be better.

He is a stereotypical "jazz" musician. He's a bit cocky, but hes so cool that you forgive him for it. He's also a very nice guy. This class would be more appropriate in a smokey bar with him and 6 other people rather than a lecture hall. He invented the jazz flute. He is a wizard. He is a God. He is... Karlton Hester.

Wow! I can't believe the whiners on this site. Not only is Karlton a good teacher and clearly loves the topics he discusses, he couldn't make it any easier to do well. The music is amazing, the text interesting and his lectures full of insight. His slides clarify the topics he will cover on exams and the prelims are not tough.

He says he teaches in a "musical style" and he will never teach any other way, but most students have never learned to play an instrument, and there's no visible structure in his lectures. Hes very ignorant and pompous. Has slides full of 12 point font up for 5 seconds, when he should have a few main points. doesnt know how to teach a college class

one of the funniest things about hester's class is how he places the notes quickly on the overhead and removes them quickly so that you can't take notes on them and all of this CLEARLY ON PURPOSE while the class whines

This class was one of the most unclear and troubling experiences i had freshman year. I thought it was going to be an easy GE, which it partly is, but the way that he presents the material is scattered and hard to follow. The line between what you need to know for exams and random facts is often indistinguishable. The material was interesting tho.

Alright so Hester is fine. Like smokin actually. But he doesn't care about you, or your grade. DONT BUY HIS BOOK. I spent 80 something dollars and never once opened it. Go to class and you should be alright.

This is probably the most frustrating and unorganized class that i have ever taken. The TAs are obnoxious and unhelpful. He assumes that you have a background in music and doest clarify anything. Goes fast during lectures and seems to have a bit of an attitude towards anything that isnt African.

Karlton is the worst "professor" I have ever had. On his tests, he copies large amount of text from his textbook (which he wrote and costs $80) and expects you to fill in one word. ANYTHING discussed in class can be put on the tests, even the most insignificant little detail can be a question that costs you points. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!

But it was the worst class ever, he was not helpful, his lectures were paragraphs after paragraphs that he makes impossible to take notes on! Made my first quarter at ucsc HELL.HORRIBLE

This is a hard class, but if you are seriously willing to put the time in to listen to a lot of music and find an interest in musical history, then this class is bearable.. If you're doing this for GE's, I recommend you do pass/no pass

This class was WAY too difficult for an introductory music course. I'm an engineering student with no music experience, yet I was expected to know a lot about music that I had learned nothing about. I studied more for this class than my upper level engineering course and got a worse grade. The amount of work is just incomprehensible. NOT EASY CLASS
