I should have been placed in a higher level class and was not challenged with Mme Newton. She did not encourage me to participate at my level. In addition, my grandmother (In LA) passed away the 2nd week of classes my freshman year and she did not excuse my absence for the funeral. In emails, she told me to "refer to the syllabus" on her policies.

Newton truly does want everyone to succeed, but this class can be very frustrating due to the strict grading policies. You have to teach yourself. Classes consist of a lot of "speaking to others in French" which does not help much. Get ready to study and do A LOT of homework. Also you do not know your grade until it appears on SSC.

Newton scared me at first but she's a really sweet lady just a picky grader. She genuinely likes her students to succeed. No final just pass the exit exams. Homework every night and mini quizzes often. Takes a long time to grade but is engaging and does try to know all of her students.

No matter what, this course is going to be hard. Don't go into it thinking it will be an easy A because you'll have to work for it. Newton is a nice person, she's hard to like because the class is so hard but she really is a good professor who wants you to succeed. Don't stress too hard about the exit exams, STUDY, but basically everyone passes!

Really nice person, but not the best teacher. I don't feel like my French improved, and everything was review from high school. A lot of homework and class activities. The in-class activities would go on for an unnecessary amount of time. It was nice that she lets you ask clarifying questions in English. She never uploads grades to Blackboard.

Very very sweet lady, will work with you if you work with her. Gives a lot of outside work which can be helpful with a language course. Genuinely wants her students to succeed so will help you in any way.

Dr. Newton's class takes a while to get used because she does a poor job of explaining how it works. Participate everyday and study before each class if you want to keep up. She doesn't answer emails. I tried visiting her office twice, but she wasn't there. She hands back grades, but does not actually put together a cumulative grade until last min.

Participation required! You will have homework after every class, and quizzes almost every class. You get extra credit for good attendance. She's rather intimidating at first and will take no mercy on you for late work. But, she knows how to teach French. No phones, no English. You need the online book. Doesn't calulate grade throughout semester.

So much outside work and tons of busy work during class. MyFrenchLab homework due every class, plus expects you to go through and do things out of the book, and sometimes skills packet work as well. Expects you to calculate your own grade, which is annoying. Quizzes almost every day. Has written down maybe five things on the board all semester.

She is the worst professor I've ever had and I'm a senior biology major with a 3.95, I had a 4.0 until I took her class. That B was way harder to get than any A I got in upper level classes. I took her sophomore year but was just discussing with my roommate about how terrible she is and figured I should write one of these. Condescending, awful.

Very sweet lady but extremely strict. Absolutely no phones EVER, you can't leave class to go to the bathroom, you can't speak in English or you will get a 0 for participation for that day.

Lot of HW from like 4 different sources. HW and quizzes every day which wasted some in class time. Although you are allowed to miss I think 4 classes, she only drops one quiz and does not accept late work. Getting an A on tests is relatively hard, but other HW, quizzes, and participation balance them out. Book lots of $$. Class basic, boring.

I hadn't taken French in 3 years and placed into this level. I've never had so much outside work from one class before. None of it is too difficult, but it is VERY time consuming. You have to pass an oral, written, and reading exam in order to pass the class. Lots of small grades. She doesn't write anything down so if you're a visual learner avoid.

Not a helpful teacher. She is very strict on missing class/quizzes and does NOT allow late homework. No matter how sick you are she does not care. Because I missed two quizzes, my quiz average was a 59% bringing my grade from an A to a C. Her classes are also boring and repetitive. Not a good teacher, she only talks and never writes things down.

The class is helpful if you're really into improving your French. I first took French in highschool for only my freshman and sophomore years and I worried at first on whether I would lag behind but I didn't feel that way in class. She does want you to participate but everyone makes mistakes so it's not too bad. A lot of work involved, but worth it.

Mme. Newton is rude and will laugh at you if you say things wrong in French. She is extremely unclear and does not post a single grade online. You will have no idea what your grade is until the semester is completely over. Most people I have spoken to did not know we were supposed to do the online homework (myfrenchlab) until about halfway though.

She was such a nice lady but requires a ridiculous amount of out of class work. There is reading or writing, as well as a myfrenchlab assignment and vocabulary or grammar work to be done before every class. Not impossible but don't take it if you have other hard classes because the busy work is extreme.

I think Mme Newton is a great French teacher! The entire class is in French but she speaks clearly and not too quickly, so its easy to understand her. Everything is spelled out very clearly concerning quizzesprojectsexams so nothing is really a surprise. Shes helpful and passionate. Can be boring at times like any class, but participation matters

I really enjoyed class with Ms. Newton. She is a very nice, and caring lady. To do well in the class, she does expect that you are present, participate and come prepared. She occasionally gives quizzes over the homework and gives reading, writing and oral exams throughout the year. She was a fair grader and will always answer any questions.

Nice lady. Hard material. Expects you to do A LOT of work outside class. This is not an easy A, be warned. The department mandates the structure of her class, so don't expect leeway in any form & don't ever miss class--popquizes cannot be made up & work accepted late gets half credit. She's extremely fair, which is good & bad. High standards.
