Dr. Smith is incredible! She cares so much about her students and wants them to succeed. There is a lot of reading, but you will get so much out of it and she really "shows up" when it comes to lectures and leading discussions. If you are having a hard time, personally or with schoolwork, she is very willing to work with you.

I took Encountering Intercultural Lit with Dr. Smith and ever have I enjoyed a class so much. She's kind and funny, ready to listen to the struggles of her students and share about drama in her department. Lots of books to read and you have to have read them by the time class starts (otherwise you are going to be lost), but the books are all good!

This was in 2003, and I'm shocked that she's still employed. She no-showed half a dozen times with no notice. The content was nearly identical to my 10th grade HS English class (and the quality of instruction/discussion was worse). I read nothing, put in minimal effort, and got an A. A complete waste of time and money (tuition).

By far the best professor I've had at Seattle University, and I'm a senior. Wonderful person and truly an advocate for social justice. May make White students feel a little uncomfortable but gets them engaged. She requires a lot of reading but all are amazing books. I've taken a few of her classes and would completely take all of them if I could.

I took Professor Smith for Black & White Allyship. The course essentially required students to read a book a week. The reading list was great (included The Help) but it was impossible to keep up with. No tests, just two papers. The only homework assigned was reflection papers and questions for each reading assignment. Class is discussion based.

I took Dr. Smith's London course, and it was incredible. She is very passionate about her subject and encourages her students to think critically. She truly cares about her students and their lives. I wish she taught more Women Studies courses. If you have the opportunity to take a class from Dr. Smith, you should definitely take it.

my favorite teacher at SU. she is VERY passionate about her work, encourages critical thinking and engagement, and as for those who think she is close-minded, she just defends her opinion; she does not grade more harshly against those who disagree with her. she teaches academic content as well as human ethics. I became much more empathetic.

Was so good in the beginning of the quarter! She gave us zen gardens, it was cool. End of the quarter started to get a little nutz!

She is an amazing professor. Do not let what you may have read here dissuade you from taking a class with her. She is flexible and ultimately aims to foster a positive learning experience for everyone. Furthermore, her class is relaxing and she is willing to listen to your opinions even if she may not agree.

Do not take a class with this woman. She grades based on personal preferences/prejudices rather than class performance, and this obvious by discrepancies between assignment grade and overall grade. She is obsessed with Catholicism to the detriment of students' learning, and she makes daily, unnecessary references to outdated films.

Strays off topic so we never really get to how the reading fits into the bigger picture. Cultivates a decent environment for students who speak up already, but if you don't like to speak up, you will never have to. Can shut students down in class if she disagrees. Not clear on assignments. Can be good, but it's a daily toss-up.

I can't believe it! I'm the second person to report on here about her not giving grades to the entire class for a paper done "wrong". It would seem to me that if the entire class missed the point, the assignment wasn't clear. One essay for the midterm, four more due in the last half of the quarter (3 within the last 2.5 weeks - wtf?!).

I loved her. One of my favorite professors thus far. She invites differing opinions and is fun to argue with. We don't focus on writing so much as in-depth analysis.

She's a very knowledgable professor but I really don't feel like her class offers anything beyond what I learned in AP Lit in high school. She is a self-professed reader response feminist and tends to spend too much time talking about her interpretation. Plenty of readings though, most of them aren't bad either. Overall, it's an OK class.

Good teacher. She goes on random tangents sometimes but she really cares about her students and important things in life. Wants students to be the best they can be. She really helps you if you need it and writes all over your papers, but is generous when it comes to grading. She wants you to learn, not to make you suffer. Made me a better writ

Class was disappointing. We read only a few of the books on the syllabus and watched the rest as movies. We wrote two essays throughout the quarter and they had strange rules that NO ONE could figure out the first time around- she didn't even grade those since everyone did them wrong. She's not very clear or helpful- I got shut down in an email.

I was dissapointed with her class. I expected something challenging and stimulating- her class was neither of those things. We just watched movies and talked about how they made us feel. She was really nice, but I didn't feel like it was a college-level class.
