He was a great teacher if you want to know single thing about cellular biology as long as you're interested. He is very passionate about this subject and will answer every question. He is also very fast paced so be sure to write/type fast and in great detail. His tests questions are VERY SPECIFIC!

Mr. Otten is a great teacher. I suck at Bio but he taught in a way that made it easier to understand. Attendance isn't mandatory but he goes more in-depth in class than on the notes that are available in Blackboard. He is pretty understanding and tries to help people out. He also gives outlines of what to study for the exams.

Worst biology 2 class ever. I'm at student on main campus and thought BA bio would be easier but I was WRONG. His expectations were unreal for bio 2. I got a C- and retook it on main campus and on main campus it was unbelievably easier than what Otten taught; almost a whole different class. DONT TAKE. I'm a bio major- would not recommend Otten

Excitable guy. He really loves ecology. Sometimes he won't be extremely clear about what he wants but he does give you the tools to succeed.

Professor Otten is a great professor! He writes all the info you need to learn on the board, so make sure to copy that and study them for your quizzes and exams. He posts study guides on blackboard. You can't redo any exams, but he does drop the lowest exam and some quizzes and gives you extra credit questions which helps your grade alot!

I was unsure about professor Otten at first, but by the end of the semester I realized he is actually a great teacher! He lectures every class and writes it all out on the board for you. Every once in awhile he offers homework that're worth a handful of points. And the best thing, he offers very detailed study guides for each quiz, test, and final

When I read his review I was so scared to take the class. I'm so glad I took the class. Professor Otten is very nice and helpful. If you pay attention in his class and study the lecture notes and handout you will be fine. He is not a tough grader. He gives you partial credit. You have to so work to get an A but it's not that hard.

Terrible teacher. Offers no help when your having trouble just repeats the question in a different manner. Makes a biology class into a history, math, english class, pretty much anything but biology.

He isn't willing to help you at all if you're having problems in the class. The tests don't have more than 5 questions on them. Studying for the practical was impossible.

Lectures at the beginning of lab for 30-60 minutes. For lab quiz as long as you read the background info you'll do fine. Gives study guide for both practical. Practicals are easy if you study. Studying for about 1-2 hours for practical and got A's both times.

He's a cool guy and a good teacher. Some people didn't like him because he's tough. You should take him if you are interested in the subject because you'll have to work hard but you'll learn a lot. I think he's one of the better teachers in the school. Lectures and labs are interesting. It's not an easy class but it pays off in what you learn.

Extremely nice guy, definitely knows his stuff. He overwhelms students with information. He will use every minute of class and lab and often runs over. He focuses too much on specific details, which then makes students not understand the content of the material. He grades homework, if you are not a biology major he may be a little overwhelming.

Lecture. Lecture. Lecture. It's all he does, even in lab. He makes his exams sound harder than they are. I felt going in I'd get a C, tops, coming out I felt I'd get an A, but I actually got a B. He wants you to read so much of the text book often and I'm a full time student and I have a part time job, that's not going to happen He suggests I work 0-6 hrs. for the amount of school and that won't cut it for me. If you don't have a job, you'd be fine but if you do, prepare for some long nights.

Nice guy. Horrible teacher. When he lectures he repeats what he says in backwards ways which makes him very hard to follow. The tests were overly difficult. And if you have a disability, he does not help you out very much, and it sometimes feels like he looks down on you, wish is a shame because he is so passionate about his subject.

He is the best to take Biology 103 with; ecology is his thing. However, if you don't want to lower your GPA, take another prof instead. No need for memorizing stuffs from the book, you won't need it. As long as you think the same way with him ( I couldn't do that), you are fine.

Prof Otten is nice, passionate and an ok teacher. But he's too intense and focuses too much on random facts rather than understanding the "big picture." He doesn't tell many stories, just lots of facts. After his class I have a ton of facts but few connections of those facts. Other RWC bio profs are easier and more enjoyable.

Professor Otten is a good guy, but he does not communicate well. I agree with the other users about his being pompous and rude at times. If you need to take Biology at RWC...do yourself a favor and take Mallory and actually learn more while having fun in class.
