Comment:
The subject is not easy and it doesn't help that all his handouts are handwritten, BUT he is understanding. Curves like crazy allowing almost everyone to pass, and if you visit him during office hours he is more than willing to help you out. Tries to make the material easy to understand, he takes attendance every class meeting. Final was hard!!!

Professor O'Malley is a kind man, and knows his material well. READ. THE. BOOK. All handouts are hand-written, even the syllabus. We were not given due dates or rubrics, so expectations are unclear. The class seems to lack structure. I personally didn't do well, but if you are a self-sufficient student, you should be fine.

This class is insanely difficult. The hardest class I have taken. But he is an incredible professor. His knowledge on the topic is excellent and is very clear in getting the point across to the students. He knows exactly what he is doing. The tests and homework is challenging and knowing everything inside-and-out regarding the theorems is a must.

Awesome professor. Regardless of being older, he thinks clearly and fast, and knows his stuff inside and out. Very helpful and willing to stay after class to give some pointers. His handwriting takes a bit to get used to, and he writes FAST on the board. Attendance is mandatory, nothing is uploaded online. Work hard and you will do well.

Comment:
This professor is tough because his teaching style is theory based. He makes you understand how to get the formulas rather than just giving you the formulas. Homework was optional so that failed some students because they didn't think it was important. I pulled an A in class. DO THE PRACTICE TESTS! If you aren't an engineering major, don't take him

I would recommend this professor due to his fairly clear teaching skills of the subject and his care-free demeanor. If you've taken Calculus 1 before, this class will be an easy ride. If you haven't, just pay attention closely and attend all classes because he does get very theoretical. DO NOT BUY POPPERS BECAUSE HE DOES NOT USE THEM. JUST BUY CODE

He means well and wants his students to learn but he falls short. As the course gets more difficult he focuses too much on the how and not the why. You'll spend most of the time copying pages of notes. He is ruthless in grading. In a theory based math course there is more than one way to do a problem. Do it a different way and he'll penalizes you.

Sincere and caring professor. In his 70's, but graded some assignments himself to ensure correct grading. Class was somewhat easy for an Abstract Algebra class, but that's because it's a graduation requirement, and many students were not prepared for a rigorous abstract algebra class. Work hard and you'll get a fair grade.

Wonderful professor. Very caring. In his 70's (?), but graded the assignments himself to ensure fair grading. The class was somewhat easy for an Abstract Algebra class, but that's because many students were not ready for a rigorous course anyway. Very sincere and hard-working. Do the work and you'll get a fair grade.

Prof O'Malley is a very nice man and really wants his students to learn the material, but he focuses too much on theory. I stupidly tok this class in a 5 week summer session-too fast for me! He doesn't use CASA like the other math classes. Tests are hand written and his penmanship is horrible! If you are quick with math, you'll do fine.

Comment:
Unnecessarily difficult because of ineffective teaching. Tests were frustrating enough because the prof couldn't effectively teach the material but to make matters worse they were handwritten in the prof's terrible handwriting. Everything I learned was on my own or from the grad student in charge of the lab. Terrible experience. Blame it on tenure.

Terrible handwriting. Constantly uses mathematician's notation on the board. Huge emphasis on theory and proof, little to no education on real world application. Verbal presentation and communication skills require serious improvement. Knowledgeable on subject matter but cannot describe such in a concise manner.

I made a 38, 60, and a 66 on my three tests. I managed to make a C because I made a 82 on the final though. Each and every time I came to his office, he was helpful and very encouraging. I would take him again, if I had the opportunity to do so. Work hard, and study hard.

Beware with Dr. O'Malley, he's a nice guy but he spends the entire class period in theory of and not in the application of. And even more beware UH's math department, all of their classes are 60% online, and horribly over crowded. The testing room requires a fingerprint scan, a keycard and a scheduled time to enter, and its taken on computer :(

I'm taking Dr. O'Malley for an online algebra class. It really helps to have discipline and self initiative to do well. Your success in this class will depend upon how much work you are willing to put into it. I can say that he is very forgiving and lenient, though....VERY. You will not find a prof at UH who will give many second chances.
