Really good professor, lots and lots of reading so make sure you do them if you take a class with him. Mostly essays and papers but they're not too hard. Really cool guy who likes to involve the class with his lectures.

He was a good teacher in class and lectured really well. He made the material interesting but you have to pay attention and take good notes. However, he was a tough grader and gave a lot of readings. He expected a lot out of his students for an elective class. Overall, good teacher but hard to know how he wants you to answer things on tests.

Dr. McDevitt is one of the most interesting professors I've ever had. I took like 8 of his classes over 5 years. He expects a lot of hard work , but it brings results. Because of him I believe I am a much more thoughtful individual. Seriously take his classes. Just do the reading.

Taking a fashion seminar with this man, and I love it! He can be a little tough when there's a class discussion and you're trying to argue your point to him, but he means well. Hysterical guy. Be prepared to read like never before, and participation is essential. However, the class environment can be very fun and mentally stimulating!

Prof. McDevitt clearly knows what he's talking about. There's a lot of reading, and you should definitely participate a lot. The paper is 15 pages, but he makes his expectations quite clear. He can occasionally come across as intimidating or harsh, but his intentions are good.

What an intellectual guy! this class was not the easiest, but definitely was worth the semester. He really cares about the students and wants everyone to do well, but you have to work for it. Calls on random people to answer SIMPLE questions for the readings. I'd recommend him :)

Comment:
The most positive aspect of McDevitt's teaching style is his ability to allow his students to feel comfortable in his classroom. I never felt nervous before classroom discussions because I knew they would be fun. He won't return your papers in a timely fashion, but he is also a very fair grader so I wasn't surprised by my grades.

He's an awesome dude and he's incredibly funny. Class isn't bad as he just goes through powerpoints but often goes off topic in some rant which is usually hilarious. He's very smart and has great stories which always makes class interesting. I'm highly considering taking another of his classes.

Easily one of the best teacher's I have ever had anywhere. You are going to have to do the reading if you want a good grade but he is fair and really funny. Definitely one of the top 3 professors I had at UB.

The work is not terribly difficult, although he does have (reasonable) high expectations. He is very clear about what he wants in papers and outlines the material in an easy to understand manner. I had a great experience with this class!

The class I took, since it was a thesis seminar, is totally non-representative of what other lectures are like, but I would describe this professor as intelligent, witty, and interesting. Somewhat harsh at times, but in a good way (if you want to improve).

only take him if you are really good at history and love it. went to every class and took notes and still did poorly. tests were difficult and it was easy to loose points. he chose 6 books for the course and they were all awful and very difficult to read. he didn't offer to help at all. i do not recommend.

The class is alot of work for a gen. ed., but the professor is really down to earth. I had him for recitation, and as long as you come to class and take notes and do the reading, the tests are a breeze

requires ALOT of reading, but tests are very easy if you go to class and take notes. A LOTTTTT of reading for a 100 level course but he really keeps it interesting. plus he calls people out for texting and sleeping it class so thats entertaining. I recommend if you dont mind reading

Attendance is mandatory! Also, for my term, he used 5 books (total cost $90) and we were required to read the whole book. Go to class, do the readings, and you'll do fine. If you don't your grade will suffer!

He is very knowledgeable about the subject matter and is very passionate about it. He is an easy grader if you do your work well. Work load can be over whelming at times but worth it, I really learned alot in his class compared to other professors in the history department (Mazon)and his sense of humor makes the class interesting.

McDevitt is certainly smart and interesting, although he does get frustrated when students aren't prepared. If you do the work, attend class, and make even a minimal effort, a B should be easy and an A do-able. He's very funny & clearly loves his subject matter.
