If you've taken Modern Art before, then this class will be an easy A! Otherwise, you will have to work very hard to understand (or memorize) over 100 paintings for each of the four slide quizzes lowest score gets dropped, btw. Furthermore, there are two papers and a final paper that require visits to the museum. Overall, this is a great class!

Comment:

Pepe is a phenomenal lecturer; lectures feels like story time. He is incredibly intelligent, but not afraid to admit when he makes a mistake or doesn't know the answer. He is kind and understanding of any issues or requests you might have. Lecturers are literally always packed. Would highly recommend for any class he teaches. Brilliant prof.

Comment:

Pepe's classes are perfect for non-Art History majors because they are enriching and engaging, but not-overly demanding in terms of essays or exams. He's a fantastic lecturer and has a long history of involvement in the New York art scene, so he's a wonderful person to learn from (and cute to boot).

Comment:

Karmel is very knowledgeable about the material, but he seems more interested in his own opinions than his students', which really isn't a big deal (just be careful when writing). The class had three short papers and midterms, but midterms were just basic slide IDs with comparisons. Overall, very doable work load and interesting lectures.

Don't know why his grades aren't all 5. He is an amazing professor! He is extremely knowledgeable about the subject matter which allows him to explain things in depth in a fun way. I'm constantly engaged in class and the content is all very very interesting. We did get our papers back in a timely manner with the help of the TAs.

Pepe should stick to his day job of gallery openings. His duties as a professor are in no way a priority. Proven by 1. never finishing the content in class, due to excessive rambling. 2. consistently failing to provide any sort of feedback and god forbid "advice" 3. successfully avoiding the grading of all 3 paper assignments. No grades in 4 months

Although he is extremely knowledgeable about the subject it's a shame we never got our papers/grades back.He is very unclear about the assignments and always apologizes that he is preoccupied with gallery openings or art catalog compilations.It has been 3.5 months and I haven't seen ONE assignment returned.Looking forward to not receiving feedback.

Such an interesting lecturer and really engaging. The work load isn't bad and you'll definitely learn a lot. He explains modern art in a way that makes it far less daunting and more approachable. He's also hilarious which helps. Definitely take him!
