Prof. Shivnan is really fun and cares a lot about her craft. The two essays you have to write in class can be somewhat hard to write, and she makes you read a lot in between each class (at least 2-3 hours per night). She'll easily give extensions or wave grades if you're respectful in class. Gives some fun assignments to break up the workflow.

I had Shivnan for Masterworks, and she was wonderful! Shivnan really cares about your imagination and your potential of being a writer. However she is also extremely hard. If she doesn't like your writing style, she WILL fail your story. Follow her advice and work EXTREMELY HARD!

Dope audio feed-back. Very specific on her draft reviews. I'm a better writer because of her. I work really hard on every essay (and do well) since I love to write, so I'm not sure what the experience for someone taking it just to fulfill a credit would be. Very nice person. Confidence boosting. Good for a writer starting out with low self esteem

Professor Shivnan is a very tough grader when it comes to grading essays, but she is pretty explicit with the corrections you should make on your papers. She actually gives you audio feedback, which is very helpful and unique. Her classes are mandatory; there are only a certain amount of classes that you can miss. Expect homework.

The best english teacher I'ver ever had. She gave me confidence in my writing that I never had in high school. She is very enjoyable to be in class with. Work hard on your papers and she will give you the grade you want. She's one of the few teachers that make UMBC worth going to.

Had her for 371 and 471. She's really helpful when it comes to giving advice about your fiction. The advice really takes your story to a whole new level. The only thing about her classes is that active participation is required. If you don't it can actually hurt your grade. If you don't like to participate, I don't suggest the class.

her grading rubrics are strange and you really need to adhere to her taste to get an 'a'. her lessons were elementary. attendance for her class is not mandatory but, after i missed 5 or 6 of her classes for a problem i couldn't avoid, she took away ALL of my presentation points. i got b's/a's on all my papers, but she gave me a d in the class.

I disliked this class. I felt like my papers were harshly graded based on such things as style or ideas. If a collection of words didn't "work for her" you'd get bumped down a grade. Don't miss a class...she seems to write you off if you rub her the wrong way, and it will show up later in your grades. Avoid if possible!

Professor Shivnan is the best writing professor I've ever had; my writing is so much improved after taking her class! She makes you work hard for the grade. Expect to be in class on time. Wonderful writer and has tons of great tips for aspiring writers. Take any of her classes if you want to improve your writing!

i learned absolutely nothing in this class. very strange grading system for the essays. i recieved several bogus grades. my high school english classes were more complex than this one. she definitely had her favorite students and treated them so. ive never been treated so much like a child from any other college professor.
