All he tests on are his opinions and random facts. I took a class where we discussed the Jesuits and the conversion of Native Americans (I am native american) and I got a C in the class because I used "Too much outside information" from my own culture and heritage. How can I turn that off? Just read the books and research them on your own.

Caton can go on for hours about nothing but still expects you to know what he wanted to talk about. I would love to have coffee or lunch with him but not another class!

The arrogance is so thick that it is difficult to learn; you're essentially part of his audience for self-gratifying speak. Take the requirement somewhere else where you will actually learn the subject.

Dr. Caton can be funny at times, but his classes are brutal, and his exams are worse. Don't expect to get an A in the class, or an A on any papers. As a matter of fact, if you are considering taking Western Civ at RWC, DONT, pay less money and get a better grade at MCC.

Reason I left the school. Worst teacher ... hard to learn from because his lectures are him talking to himself. Bad advisor

Worst teacher I've ever had. Has a superiority complex so he gives failing grades to make himself feel better. Lectures are completely off topic and random. Would be better to label it the history of the catholic church since that is all he talks about. Tests are on western civ but he doesn't teach any of it. No real textbook- collection of essays.

Loved Dr. Caton & this class. Took last semester. I have a learning disability but taking notes while he talked & told stories helped me remember everything. Take thorough notes in class & from book used incl. "side characters", names & dates for tests. Wish I could take a all history classes w/ him. One of the best teachers I've ever had.

He can be a little scatter brained a lot of the time, but he always has a point to make at the end of his stories. He knows how to make class fun through his crazy voices and weird stories. His tests are really hard and make sure you read the book when you do your responses.

Despite what people have been saying, these classes are easy, common sense stuff. His lectures are often off topic and completey pointless, but can be funny at times. All in all, not worth the bother. You can spend an hour in his class and not learn a thing.

Lectures were completely off topic. He didn't even take the time to learn anyone's names. Tests were completely book based which was never used during his lectures. All reading and studying to be done on your own, blindly. AWFUL. GOOD LUCK.

Caton is hilarious. You don't think you're learning anything until the last five minutes when he brings all his random gibberish together for one big finale. The creed is a little whacko, but he claims it makes people money. Highly recommend this man and this class I learned a lot

His grading on essay's is pretty random. Decent teacher, classes are pretty boring though. Doesn't really offer any help outside of class.

Dr. Caton is an intellectual inspiration. The man is clearly widely read and highly intelligent but with a personality that is blithe. Some have said that they don't learn much from his classes, but as I reflect on the many classes I've taken with him, I have in fact learned a great deal. The reading alone is a great primer for lifelong learning

all tests entirely on reading. six chapters of reading on each test this is for western heritage 2. 50 some odd dates to memorize no way 2 know what out of the 6 chapters is on each test. Really random questions very detail specific. Terrible class take western civ 1 not 2 trust me!

Classes are much more interesting if you come with questions about the era you want to talk about. That should go without saying, but many times people don't come prepared and then are bored.
