Tests and labs work against your grade. He's a strict grader, and doesn't give extra credit.

If you struggle with math, physics, chemistry, and geology don't take this class. I'm not a science major but I had to take this class as a prerequisite. Labs are difficult to complete, and drop your grade down. Lecture was boring, sat through the entire period listening and taking notes. This class doesn't offer tutoring.

I thought the class was awesome. Minus the math, but i am no math wizard. He was very punctual when it came to replying to emails. If you miss class you will miss a lot of info. I missed a lot of classes due to VA appts and i was kind of lost in the sauce at the end of the semester. I recommend you attend class.

I don't recommend taking this class and this professor. He has a condescending tone when answering questions and makes you feel stupid for asking a question a legitimate question. Also, he's a harsh critic when it came to tests and labs; your grade will drop significantly because of his way of grading. Physics, chemistry and math is included.

Go to class and you will pass. Luckily Steve makes class pretty entertaining. There were like 6 people who showed up every day and we all had a good time.

Dr. Mutz is very dependable instructor. Each class begins with a calendar review and up coming assignments. He grades fairly and very quickly. The lectures are not mandatory but you will have trouble in the class if you do not attend. Use all the materials provided on line.

His class was absolutely amazing. He knows so much about what he's talking about and made it so interesting. This was the one class I actually looked forward to and enjoyed being in. The study guides are exactly what was on the test. He encouraged questions, assignments were easy, graded quickly, replies to emails promptly, and offered extra credit

I asked questions about the Horizon Problem and Dark Flow, questions Mr Mutz did not have answers for. He was not rude or patronizing but welcomed my contributions. I don't know why some reviewers have said he is condescending. Also, his tests are really, really easy. Just show up to his lectures and you'll pass.

Comment:
Do not take AST 111 with Mr. Mutz. The tests presented are nearly impossible. Also, if you have a question, Mr. Mutz makes you feel stupid for asking it. Sometimes, he even mocks you. Totally uncalled for, how are we supposed to learn if we are made fun of for asking questions?

Comment:
Mr. Mutz's class is extremely hard. It feels as if he expects the students to learn much more then they are capable of each test. His study guides do not match what is on each exam which makes it almost impossible to do well. Avoid this class at all costs.

Mr. Mutz wasn't the best teacher I've ever had. There are quiz's every Sunday that aren't that bad and tests every four weeks. All you do in class is take notes, which aren't very helpful. If you don't do good the first test you are pretty much screwed the rest of the semester.

Mr. Mutz was probably one of my favorites. Although his classes are tough he really inspired me to look at the stars. I've taken multiple classes of his and I loved everyone of them. He's a good teacher a little bit a bully if you ask something dumb, but definitely made me think before I spoke. He is the reason I'm now majoring in Astrophysics.

Mr. mutz is a good professor, but he tries to put WAY too much information into his lectures. He gives out reviews before tests that will only have about 14 of the information needed (34 of the reviews not used). He also provides websites to read that i stopped reading half way through the semester, because they were not related. TOO MUCH INFO

Literally hated his class. Took it because I thought it would be stress free and interesting. Not at all. Not many assignments but it ended up working against me. Expects you to memorize way too much info and he's very unreasonable. Don't take this class!

I'm currently in his class and as I'm looking around the room I see at least 4 people sleeping. I'm pretty sure astronomy is really exciting, but I would not know this after taking this class. I know there's got to be a better way to present this material. There has to be. His voice drones on and now the person sitting next to me is snoring.

Mr. Mutz is a good teacher and no hard feelings but he is all over the place i study so hard, all of his test study sheets were not on the test his syllabus sucks. 20% for each test and there are 3 and his final exam is 25% with his online quizzes 15% so if you aren't a test taker it may not be good, I hope he changes his syllabus someday.
