Have taken a few classes with Dr Taubeneck and all I can say is that he is the best professor I have ever had. He cares about his students and wants you to do well, he encourages you to explore different ideas, and overall he cares little for the often arbitrary formalities of academia. A real gem. Will miss his classes when I graduate.

Such an amazing, wise, caring professor with a deep understanding of the world, people, connections, and life. Great sense of humor. Great knowledge of words, both English and German. I always leave lecture sad that it's over and it feels like only 30 minutes!

I was super close to dropping out of Stevens class but the longer I stuck around the more I realized that hes the "Straight out of a movie" Philosophy professor. If you have wacky ideas or wanna do stuff slightly outside of the scope of the class, he'll accommodate you. Flip side is that your work is your own and so it does require reading etc.

Steven was a very caring professor and allowed for edits on all work. This class was very hard material to grasp but well worth it to take it with him.

Dr. Taubeneck is a gem. He genuinely wants his students to succeed and allows you to revise your work throughout the term for a better grade. His lectures are hilarious and amazing. He spells out the complexity of existentialism (where the is basically no right or wrong answer) into something concrete and understandable. Would take again !

Dr. Taubeneck is an incredible professor. He is extremely enlightened and helps his students gain an understanding for the absurdity that is university. Existentialism at times can be quite deep, dark, and even depressing but it helps you see things in a different light. Would definitely recommend any of his courses.

Took this last term. He's a "chalk and talk" kind of guy. Go to class and write down everything he says for the main points. If you write his basic points you can get a B+, get an A for putting your own argument. Everything is based on writing essays (midterm & final, papers), but you can redo them as many times.

As an analytic philosophy student in a heavily continental class, Taubeneck made the experience far more interesting and engaging than I had anticipated. Despite our philosophical disagreements, Taubeneck is one of the best lecturers I have had the pleasure of being taught by.

This was my fourth class with Steven and it did not disappoint. The readings were interesting and taken from a wide range of sources. The exams, again, were pretty easy to do well on and he allows everyone to revise their exams as much as they want before the due date. The paper was also very broad but you can tailor it down to what interests you.

Teaching is Taubeneck's life. He's well-read; discusses the readings with his students on a very good intellectual level that inspire them to explore the discipline or a particular author further. His classes are fun and memorable and although students do a lot of work (reading, writing), no one seems to mind. He's also a wonderful person.

Everyone needs to take at least one class with Steven before they graduate from UBC! He's seriously the best professor I ever had and his exams are so open that you can write whatever you want. I really like how he allows his students to revise their work too. Take his class- you won't regret it and you'll be a better person for it.

Wonderful, hilarious man. His German Cinema course is a MUST if you want to fulfill your lit credit and are into film. His lectures were interesting and insightful. He was very kind and helpful during office hours. Mostly importantly he was very understanding of the plight of University students and offered to lessen the load of midtermsfinal paps
