He performs while he lectures! Tom will no doubt entertain you, but more importantly he will instil a love of Shakespeare (even if you go in fearing him, like I did). A wonderful teacher who cares about his students, has a mastery of all the plays (he was a professional Shakespearian actor), and deserves to be teaching full-time at UVic.

Simply the best. Going into 4th yr. and wish I could take the rest of my education under Dr. Apple. WHAT IS WRONG WITH UVIC ADMIN. ARE THEY AFRAID OF HIRING TEACHERS WHO TEACH STUDENTS TO THINK FOR THEMSELVES? If you are an En Mj, wait for Dr. Apple in the summer. These classes will effect the rest of your life as Shakespeare should.

Lively, inspiring, brilliant & challenges students to truly engage with the material. Dr. Apple's classes are not too be missed. Administration is INSANE for not offering him a full time position -- best prof I've had at UVic. Thoughtful & thought provoking, TAKE HIS SUMMER CLASSES IF YOU CAN!!!

If you want a REAL education, be challenged to think for yourself, have your worldview and relation of yourself to it expanded, take Dr. Apple. I come from a family of teachers, am an older student who has taught for 17yrs, and in all my experience Dr. Apple is the best teacher I have ever met. UVic would be privileged to have him full time.

Dr. Apple is truly what a teacher should be...he is passionate about his students learning and discovering what is truly important and relative to life. He challenges and teaches his students to think, not regurgitate. He is a rare find! UVIC would be wise to hire him fulltime!!

He would be a good Shakespeare as Theater prof, but as a literature prof, he's not so great. He skips around a lot, and never clearly makes points. My understanding of the plays we covered decreased because of attending his classes. As well, his assignment expectations were not clear, nor were his exams.

Didn't like him. I love Shakespeare, but he was uninspiring. It's just a summer class, but he didn't use the time well. Goes off on tangents too often. Good public speaker, but poor teacher. Clearly likes Shakespeare, but can't teach it. If you enjoy Shakespeare, take it with another prof. If you find it hard, take it with him. Won't take him again

This guy is the paradigm of the perfect and caring teacher. He is lively, passionate, and dedicated to teaching. He rocks. He is not the easiest marker, but he is not hard. He makes the unbearable (i.e. Shakespeare) bearable.

Apple is the best summer english prof by far. His love of Shakespeare is apparent through his entertaining as well as stimulating lecture style. Do the reading, enjoy William for his gift, and you too shall get a high mark.

If you are willing to take Shakespeare in the summer, do it with Apple, the best ever. He listens and admits he may be wrong. Interesting and only demands you think and read the text. Come up with an interesting argument and you'll get the grade. :o)
