Comment:

One of the most challenging classes I've ever taken, but the most rewarding. He looks scary on the outside but when you break past the first couple weeks he turns you into the writer you've always wanted to be. I would take classes from him for the rest of my life if I could. Give him a chance and you'll find the reward!

Comment:

Johnson is the best professor I have ever had. Do the reading. If he tells you to read something twice, then read it twice. Listen. You will thank him later. He is a compassionate man with a wicked sense of humor who cares about his students, college, and community. He put up the paintings in Jordan Hall with frames he bought from local yard sales.

You must take all of his classes in retrospect. Going into your first class with him can be very daunting but I guarantee that anyone willing to admit their faults and make an effort in the class will come out a more learned individual.

it's much easier after the fact to say that his class was wonderful; years later i can see how he helped the quality of my writing. i wouldn't say his class was the most enjoyable, but i WOULD say that it was one of my most beneficial courses. he's not there to make friends; he's there to teach. i learned a lot from him AND walked away liking him.

I think it's unfortunate that most students can't appreciate Art's classes. He's actually a pretty funny guy if you get over your fear of him--which by the way is not entirely justified. You come to college to be treated like an adult. If he thinks your writing sucks or is redundant or deadwood or what have you, then he'll let you know. This isn't high school. No one is kissing your ass. Stop crying about it!!

He is a hard prof. He's not the nicest guy either. you better do your reading in this class, because he never uses multiple choice or anything, it's all short answers, and his answers are very detailed. it's hard to get a good grade with him.
