Comment:
He is well-versed but a VERY hard grader. He expects a lot from you even if you are a freshman. He encourages discussion but can get off topic easily. Pay attention in class so you know what to write on, and make sure you can write a good essay then you MIGHT get an A.

I took Dr. Silver for A.O.K. He provides an abundance of notes via blackboard and really explains the material. He made Socrates, Plato, Descartes, and Hume very understandable. He places a lot of emphasis on his written assignments and it takes a very well written paper to earn an A. Otherwise, he's friendly and sometimes amusing.

My grade was too heavily weighted upon my writing ability, rather than my understanding of the material. It seemed as though I would need to be an English major in order to get an A in his class. I learned a lot about Plato but mainly due to keeping up with the reading and being interested in the subject. I would take him again if not retiring.

"Plato," is already a difficult subject, but Mr. Silver makes it far more understandable than any other professor at this university. Understands his stuff and has a passion for the work. You'll laugh every class.

Critical Thinking, ugh... Mr. Bruce Silver is gifted when it comes to vocabulary (very well versed), and I guess knows philosophy, but I have a hard time with his lectures.Weakness is a voice that puts me to sleep, never fails. Retiring after Spring 2004.

Lectures for 2 hours. Dont need to pay attention, just get the notes. Use your TAs to help explain since he doesnt get it across all the time. Otherwise, pretty good and a few times funny.

Only take if you LOVE philosophy. Only 1/12 of the class is actually spent on "critical thinking" which is the course's title. Teacher is long winded and gets off subject way too many times. Drop the class immediately and try to find a different
