Comment:

Overall great professor. He teaches with an eye toward history and technique (and how the two comingle). My one qualm would be having attendance and participation make up 10% of the grade. It feels out of place and unnecessary in a college level art class. Make sure to show up though, as the in class work makes up most of your grade.

Comment:

He is extremely skilled, does get a little strict if you are off topic but doesn't mind if you talk to students around you or listen to music. His advice can be a bit stale, but if you don't understand he will slow down and clarify for you which is amazing. As much as you might not like some of the assignments, they help a lot for improvement. :)

He is really skilled and has been drawing for so long. He always has good advice too. He let us listen to music but do not let him catch you texting because that is his biggest pet peeves. He gives a lot of feed back after you turn in your portfolio so you can re-work your pieces. Don't miss class, you can fall behind fast

Comment:

Brilliant man with a gift to teach whose who genuinely want to learn. He has all the experience and know-how necessary to instruct a novice to advanced skills. The individual advice he gives each student is invaluable. Even if the reasons are not at first clear, you'll find that he knows exactly what he is talking about. Soooo recommended him!

He is an amazing teacher! Very dry sarcastic humor, but really nice guy. He always has a positive way to help you get better and never makes you feel bad as an artist. I have gotten 1000 times better at art due to his direction and attention. He is probably the best art teacher ever. Makes you really want to do your work and better yourself.

Schmalstig made the class fun and easy. The homework never takes up an exorbitant amount of time, perfect for having multiple classes in a semester. He's a funny guy who gives helpful comments and feedback during lab time. His homework and classwork instructions are suuuper clear.

Dennis is very intelligent, intuitive, & knowledgeable about art techniques and artists overall. He will impart that knowledge to help you grow. he's a funny guy, totally deadpan. i saw him laugh exactly twice the whole semester. he just shows you how to do stuff and then tells you to do it, and he'll come by every few minutes and give you tips. i couldn't draw before and now i can, so i guess he did his job. he's a very forgiving grader as well. i rly rly rly wish we could listen to music.

when i began this class he said that, eventually we would draw faces and people. i scoffed-i can't draw people, period; plus, i was graphics oriented and forced to take this class. on the final project i drew myself near perfectly. he is an AWESOME teacher, who guides without force and his feedback is always helpful. and he is fun to just talk to.

Great instructor. Very helpful. Hard work if you are a beginner but he pushes you to get better and it does pay off at the end. I've always doodled and drawn stick figures and now, after his class, I am drawing portraits, moving figures, and anime. He's shown me the light. Very hopeful and not overly critical.

good teacher. never taken art b4 but drew as a hobby. i took his class and it really improved my skills and even learn new ones. very helpful if ur stuck on technique. he will let u make up work if u missed class. try to go to every class tho. easy going guy. i recommend!

He's a really good teacher. Very genuine in his desires to want to help you to get better. A little eccentric but what artist isn't. He also teaches at Crealde. I am hoping to take him there too. He is really good at giving you pointers so you're not flying solo with your assignments.

DrawingI. If you're an artist and enjoy creativity/expression, DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. I dropped this class for good reason. I love drawing, excited to take a 3hr class. However, any time I tried to add a creative touch to inanimate objects, prof. told me "Thats lovely, move on", in a very condescending manner. Not a creative bone in his body.

Professor Schmalstig was very patient with me because I had never taken any art classes before. I improved so much as class went on. He is a great professor, and I'm taking him again next semester!

Down to earth prof. Once he knows and trusts you, he is willing to work with you if life hits hard. Expected level of homework (drawing classes have a lot of homework, people, stop whining.) and even some slack if he feels it's too much. Be real with him, he's real with you.
