Comment:

I love Ms. Johns! She is a very kind professor and is very open to student input. Discussions frequently went of topic, but in a good way! She does call on students at random, so doing the reading is absolutely essential, and there is so much reading, but a lot of it's worth it! I read one of my new all-time favorite novels for this class. Take it!

Ms. Johns is brilliant but can't communicate well. She was unwilling to meet about papers and answer questions. A common answer to questions was "look it up online." She constantly references books we haven't read and rarely talks about the actual readings. She is incredibly unclear and then gets angry when people ask questions.

She seemed cool and entertaining in class which was fine....right until you had to write a paper or do any kind of work besides reading. The classes were unorganized, the topics were never clear, and we were given very little, if any, direction on papers. Then she'd criticize you because you didn't have a clear focus in your assignment.

Comment:

Johns is intelligent and competent, but very inarticulate. The readings and discussions are interesting. More clarity is needed in the lectures. Very theoretical. Paper topics are confusing. She chooses favorites and does not learn the names of all students. Approachable and friendly outside of class, but in class she often singles out students.

I learned nothing. This class has no focus, and she is not capable of teaching to the material. She also failed to list prerequisites she thought she had included, and turned back the first papers two weeks before the final papers were due. She gives students no idea of what her expectations are then penalizes them for not knowing.

I seriously have no idea what this woman is talking about EVER. She's a pretty cool lady, even though she clearly favors a few kids in the class to the exclusion of just about everyone else (took her an entire module to learn my name). Very tangential, very abstract and theoretical, incomprehensible--makes otherwise interesting material difficult.

You definitely have to do some work to follow her, but just ask her directly what she is talking about and she is very accomodating. When you think she's not making sense, it's actually because she's thinking in the 5th dimension of complexity because she's a genius. Very very illuminating classes.

First day- started by announcing that she had no interest in the topic and proceeded teach a class of incomprehensible tangents without regards to their relevance. Would leave class during presentations then accuse the students of not presenting certain information. It was an assignment to figure out what the assignment was itself.

For an English teacher, Johns is a very ineffective communicator: her paper assignments were so long and wordy that we would have literary discussions simply trying to figure out what to write. Her class discussion were boring and tangential; as a consequence, no one did the readings, further deadening the class.

Ms. Johns is really cool. This class was challenging, but good. Her lectures are really deep and can be hard to follow, but she is nice. I would enjoy her in a smaller class more, I think, but I wouldn't urge people away from this class at all.

Amazing prof, very knowledgable. I didn't know much about African American literature, but she was very helpful in guiding us through. She's humourous, insightful, a fair grader. I worked hard for her class, but only because she made me want to.

Professor Johns is so cool. She is incredibly dynamic and smart and manages to engage the whole class. While she has a sometimes off-color sense of humor and her train of thought is difficult to follow (she can get kind of carried away), i would definitely recommend this class/professor to anyone

Comment:

Don't take "Advisor Ratings" too seriously . . she's great as a professor! I really got a lot out of her class and appreciated her sense of humor and general nature. And she's super SMART! Very easy to talk to and willing to help. She also writes A LOT of constructive comments on papers. I felt like my whole class enjoyed her teaching style :)
