I absolutely LOVED this class w/ Carley! He has a lot of enthusiasm for English lit and it shows in his entertaining lectures. Provides lots of historical background which some ppl may see as rambling but actually helps w/ context. Didn't have him as a TA but I heard he's a VERY hard marker. Very insightful. Sit near the front - he's quiet.

He has a horrible lecture style: trailing off, asking questions continually(lecture, not a tutorial!), stream of consciousness with no coherent order, wheezy tone that's hard to understand. He asks questions about texts he just expects you to have read! Not listed in the req. were they?! My worst class this year, I dread it. And too much reading.

It's quite the task to make english on a monday morning exciting, but he managed to do it! It was refreshing how much he cared about what he was teaching. Probably the best class I had all year in terms of fairness and organization. Just make sure you show up to class and keep up with the readings!

Unfortunately, there is nothing good I can say about Dr. Carley. He's hard to hear even in a small lecture hall with a microphone and there is way too much reading. I personally can't focus on anything he says because his tone is very monotone and wheezy. I dread going to this class, which disappoints me because I was really looking forward to it.

He's nice but difficult to understand. There is way too much reading material for a first year course. I can't understand half the things he's saying and he doesn't explain the material very well. His lecture a terribly boring and although he's passionate about his work, he's hard to follow most of time. I would not take this as a 1 yr course!

He is very funny and trys really hard to make the information/lectures more interesting. he just needs to speak louder. This class in general was really good and very helpful. I learned a lot! Lots of reading though.

I took this course in my first year--and am currently going into my 4th year--at the time, i didnt think that i had learned much-but in every English class i have taken to date, i have used something that Carely talked about in EN1400. This class is a great "groundwork class". I recommend it to all English Majors!

Nice enough man, but a horrible prof. Has an impressive knowledge of material, and he cares about the students, but in the end is not a very good lecturer.

Very interested in what he was teaching which in turn got me interested in what I was learning about. Very helpful if you asked. Expected a lot and challenged you to do better which, in the end, worked.

Excessive written and group work assignments (will probably change, as this was the first year the course was offered), content was sometimes tedious, but the humourous teaching-style of both Prof. Carley and Prof. Juhasz-Ormsby made the course enjoyable.

Clarity is his biggest issue: he needs to speak louder; present his lectures in a more logical manner; and ask more relevant questions

Very all over the place in his lectures! He also talks too quiet and trails off at the end of sentences. Also asks too many q's instead of lecturing, and expects you to know everything before he even teaches it! Pretty nice guy overall tho, I like him better as a person than a prof!

Professor Carley is just amazing. He is the smartest man I know, and he loves to share his wealth of information with you. Passionate about his craft. Great as a prep for the real world of university- which is hard work. Very inspirational.

He claimed unicorns were in the Bible in one of the first classes--and had the lamest excuses for not being able to tell me exactly where when I asked. Just relax, listen to him, but don't take him too seriously or openly disagree with him.

This teacher is wonderful He has a dry bitish wit, and is very interesting to listen to because he engages you in his topis. He takes novels and transforms them into history. If you cannot make a deadline, discuss it with him. He is very fair.

AMAZING prof! Definetly not an easy marker, but you get a great wealth of knowledge from the class. A must for an English/History double-majors.
