Comment:
He is a little odd and has a dry sense of humor. He cares about students and is very passionate. Go to office hours even if you don't want to, he likes students that go to them. Blue Book test methods, study guides are nearly the test. It should be easy to get an A or B. The downside with him is you're going to read more than you ever have before.

You NEED to go to class to make a decent grade this class. Lavery is a fair grader and kind of weird but he cares about his students. As long as you go and take decent notes, you'll be fine.

Comment:
I had Western Civilization after 1500 and the class was pretty difficult but I wouldn't say it was hard. Attendance isn't mandatory but you'll see that you need to go. If you take notes and do the textbook readings, this class isn't bad at all. Tests are hard because the study guides barely help at all, but Dr. Lavery is funny and has good lectures

His tests are ridiculous. I thought it would be easy, but he thinks that all of his questions are common sense, but they're not. Try to memorize what you read in the book cause you'll need it

Dr. Lavery knows he is smart, which he is. Don't be surprised if he calls himself an international expert and talks about Finland. But saying that he made lectures interesting and the class wasn't to difficult. He does take attendance. Has a weird sense of humor that is funny at times and just stupid at other points.

Great Teacher. Easy to work with. He makes the lectures fun and easy to relate too. Gives a lot of reading assignments, but they aren't really that bad. Read the book, and take good notes and you'll be fine. Offers no extra credit.

Prof. Lavery's class isn't that bad. Even though there are A LOT of reading assignments, they aren't hard at all. I was never a straight A student but I got an A in his class. Just try and you'll do fine. Anybody who says this class is difficult needs to re-evaluate as to why they're in college.

Unhelpful with questions, totally inflexible when it comes to special situations (serious illness), expects you to have a massive knowledge of the region before entering the class, lectures are interesting, high amount of reading/assignments but they aren't difficult

He does have pretty good lectures, he throws things in to keep your attention and can be funny. He is the type that knows what he is talking about and expects you to be just as knowledgeable but of course that isn't possible. He tries to cover way to much over the semester. There is also a ton of reading. I am just glad it it over.

I really like this guy! Teaches very well! Has dry humor, but really good dry humor. Not one of those with a monotonous tone, but is very good at teaching history! Do all of the assignments and the textbook readings and go to all of the lectures, it is absolutely worth your time!

By far the best history teacher I've ever had. He always seems to make lectures interesting by the way he talks about them. Lots of reading but totally worth it.

This guy rocks! He covers the material very well. Tests are challenging but not too hard by any means. Also, he has a great dry sense of humor and has been known to do an occasional Butt-Head impression. Great lectures and challenging homework that he makes interesting. I highly recommend this guy.

Lavery is an intimidating man, because he DOES love himself. It is rewarding to get done with his courses, because he pushes you to get through it. He's also a hardass and rigid though.

I had Dr. Lavery for 6 different courses. Hands down one of the most intelligent Professors I've ever met. His classes are difficult but rewarding. Also a good professor to have on your side. If he knows you well he writes the most excellent recommendations!!!

Interesting Subject. Great professor. Course suffers from covering too much material in too short of a time span.
