I took Chem 0500 with John and really enjoyed him as a prof. He is very passionate about what he and has lots of fun bringing experiments and other visual tools to lecture to help students remember the topics. He cares about his students so if you are struggling he will try to help. The tests are generally harder than what is expected in class.

Really good prof, he takes time to explain things very clearly and does lots of examples on the board. Highly recommend for anyone looking to refresh high school chemistry or build a foundation for higher level chem classes.

Maybe this is because I suck at Chem, but the prof teaches like he expects you to already know about CHEM and the course is just a review. Very easy to slip up and fall behind in class because everything stacks up. Tough grader, even on assignments which are something like 20% of your grade.

John was overall a nice guy but the worst professor that I've ever had. He was constantly late and had his phone going off the entire class. I counted it going off 9 times in a 50 minute class and he wouldn't turn it off. He makes the material seem very easy and simplifies everything and then makes the mid-terms the worst thing you've ever seen.

This course is Chemistry at fast pace (2-3 chapters per class) with math equations and chem formulas. Textbook is needed to understand what's going on. It is not a discussion class, day 1 is atoms and molecules, last class is organic chem (knowing what a ketone structure is). There are 2 weighted heavy exams, final 5 chapters.

Comment:
this class is Chemistry (not really watered down), math equations and formulas. Course description is a lie, start at what an atom is and end with organic chemistry identifying what an esther is or ketone. Read the book to know what is happening at fast pace. Avoid if math fast pace chemistry isn't for you (2 chapters per class).

John is a caring and nice prof, but he doesn't know how to pass across information effectively to his students. If you want a good grade, attendance is mandatory. His exams are worded in such a difficult way (confusion101). Constant practice and study is a must (expect the impossible on his exams)

He is a great prof, just get ready to study the course material yourself if you aren't that good at chem. His office is open. Always book appointment with him at leat twice a week to keep up with the class.

Professor Eng is very caring, and wants his students to learn and do their best, however, his teaching style is very scattered and disorganized. His lectures are too rushed and he does not ask the same questions on the exams from the content we go over in class. Not an easy A, or B, or C.

I never know what he will ask in his exams. They are crazy hard! I studied for this class more than any other my classes and yet I'm doing really bad in it. If you don't have a God-given natural talent in Chemistry then you'll struggle in this class. This is Chem500 we are not chem majors! He is a great person but not a very understanding teacher.

John is willing to help when you need it, but he is very confusing in his lectures. He rushes through things fairly quickly and then tests on them without covering them again. Your textbook is a must have for this class. He also requires participation, talking out in class is a must.

John's classes are extremely difficult and without attending class or doing the required reading the chances of passing are very slim. He marks on a scale, meaning the grading scheme is fluid. Basically it is you against the rest of the class. Also his witty chem shirts are enough incentive to return to class!

John is a caring guy who is more than willing to help you when you ask. The problem is you are going to have to ask a lot because his lectures are insanely confusing and unorganized. if you have some chemistry background you will make it, but if not expect to need help with the fundamentals because you will be seriously confused.

Given the nature of the class, building fundamentals, I found it lacking overall. Prof. Eng's teaching style was very relatable but also all over the map and didn't really fit the exams. Material wasn't available online and combined with the ambiguous lecture style I found it difficult to prepare for the next lecture.

Don't take this class if you think its going to be an easy A. John's tests are really difficult as he gives you the test material about 2-4 lectures before the test, making other lectures seem like a complete waste of time. Participation marks are part of your grade so don't even think of not going to "unnecessary lectures". nothing is online.

His grading scale is non-existent/ makes no sense. That being said, he is a great prof.Takes time after class to explain things to students, and really try to spark their interest. Genuinely kind and caring. One of the comments below me said he focused to much on the science aspect of the course...it is a science class,so go in expecting science...

Really good prof, very helpful if you are willing to ask. Kept a NON-science student interested, and found good ways to explain material to beginners. One of my favorite profs so far! (Don't know what those two reviews below me were talking about, this guy was great)
