Comment:
The course itself is filled with interesting information. I took the course to explore this interesting topic and I was interested in the reading. The professor ruined everything. She lectures and goes off on tangents that makes me wonder if she lives on the same planet. Her comments are unnecessarily rude. Save yourself. Don't take the class.

I second "the worst class ever." Papers are exorbitantly difficult because the topic is too ambiguous. All you do is sit around in a circle for two and a half hours per week and listen to her and your classmates ramble on in circles about absolutely nothing.

Worst. Class. Ever. The reading is beyond boring and dense. You sit in a circle and discuss the reading and she fields the absolute worst questions. Do not take if you're looking to stay awake for an hour and 15 minutes. There has to be better FYS options out there.

I could not be more bored in this class. The topic had potential (Search for the Self) and was poorly executed. Insanely hard grader for almost no reason. Asks for our opinions on papers and then gives us bad grades for our opinions. Do not take. Many of my classmates also agree.

Barely assigns graded work, but when she does, she is way too tough of a grader. Do not expect to get an easy A or B in this class. Even with the help of the writing consultant (which she made mandatory for the entire class) the grades many of us received were not fair. Furthermore, her final is way to much to ask of her students.

Comment:
Whitehead's FYS search for self is EXTREMELY boring unless you honestly enjoy analyzing texts and stuff like tha. Every single class is the exact same: walk in, sit down, and you sit in a big circle and just talk about the reading the whole time. It's not that hard of a class, only homework is reading, but she's a pretty tough grader on the essays.

She would be better suited to a high school level. She does not analyze texts, only rereads them in class. Very helpful comments but her teaching style isn't engaging.

She basically just rereads parts of the book. I thought the class was going to be really exciting considering it is titled Search for Self, but my 15 classmates and I have done enough digging and can't wait for the semester to end. Tough grader on big papers. Doesn't really know the books she is presenting. Alot of comparative essays

Good professor overall. Do the reading and participate a little in class and it is a good experience. Everyone complains about Core at Richmond but I think its been my favorite class so far. She is corny, funny, and a moderate grader. Oh and that other comment isn't true; I'm a guy and I got an A.

she's not bad as far as core teachers go. you have to do a reading report for every class which is a pain more than anything else. hates to get off topic during discussions but loves to play devil's advocate. classes are normally dull b/c she just reads sections of the book aloud and gives her opinion. pretty hard grader on essays.

Little homework beside readings and two big papers (about 6-7 pages each). Takes CORE very seriously. She is a hard grader and is very picky about specific content details.

If you're a guy, expect a B- to be your ceiling grade, cause she hates. Otherwise, she gives no work other than reading, so expect a couple essays for the semester.

She'll definitely help you out, but you have to be willing to help yourself as well. She doesn't like to get off topic, and she's pretty tough grading-wise.

She may seem like a quirky little librarian, but she'll definately go out of her way if you ask for help. Participate in class and you'll do very well.
