Ehlbeck is pretty motivational. He is pretty cool when comes to the beginning of the semester. Thought things get really hard and quick. I recommend everyone to take him for drawing. Critiques almost every class. He also doesn't do the same things other drawing teachers do. Expect to GREAT DELAY on your drawings.

I started with survey and this prof helped me realize it all. He demands good work and no bs, show up for class and listen to what hes saying, through all of it youll find the answers. Just dont get frustrated! Ehlbeck is awesome and if/when he retires will be missed!

Big E is an awesome professor, and really grounded people in drawing and composition. He was always talking about "figure ground relationship" in critiques, and really pushes students to care about what they are doing. And really makes you want to work. Etching takes work to do well. I was there around the time of Trace-y as well :-)

I had Ehlbeck years ago. He changed my life and really made me understand what it means to work hard at you craft and be the best you can. Awesome person, great friend, excellent teacher. I had Mr. Ehlbeck as a teacher years ago, he seemed a bit confusing until one day he told me, he tries to talk everyone out of their ideas, if he did so, then YOU didn't believe in the concept, if he could not talk you out of it, then he knew you would have passion for the piece.

I understand what he is attempting to do with his "unique" approach to "teaching", unfortunatley years of apathy and terrible results have taken their toll and what might be a good idea doesn't work when you've gone so far off the deep end you confuse yourself when you speak. A clear example of someone not knowing when to bow out gracefully.

look guys, youre going to get out of this class what you put into it. Your little literal minds are not going to fly, though, have an open mind and realize that hes not going to feed you answers, hes going to spark your mind. and if you listen, it will work. hes extremely smart and cultured. you dont have to agree with him, just listen and learn.

I am a former student and now teach drawing and professionally illustrate for 20 years. I learned detail,in drawing from him. He didn't challenge or push boundaries. I learned more about drawing concepts long after graduating with the BFA from other University instructors.

Increiblly hard grader, likes everything full and completed to the point of no white paper showing. Always willing to explain though. Bad point never gave any grades until weeks before semester ended, so ask him if you are unsure, it could help.

He is insane, but that is what makes him such a good teacher. He is very hands on and likes to help people with their work. He also grades pretty hard, but if you are looking for a teacher who is a real O.G. (original gangsta) get Ehlbeck.
