Comment:
Professor Hancher is very knowledgable, especially about the Victorian era, as the class I took was on Victorian Literature. The only complaint I have is that a lot of the material we covered seemed irrelevant, and I don't feel like I actually learned much of anything.

Michael is my favorite professor so far in the English department. He is really enthusiastic about Victorian studies and extremely knowledgeable. He was always kind and gave helpful feedback. He also went above and beyond by pointing out sources specific to the topics we picked for our two papers. You can really tell he wants everyone to succeed.

Professor Hancher is probably one of the most accomplished professors I've had at the U. If you take a look at his curriculum vitae, it's astounding. His brilliance and intelligence shows in his lectures and class, though sometimes it felt like he dragged on a bit. Overall, a pretty solid professor. If you go to class, you'll definitely learn.

Very smart man who at first may appear intimidating, but is quite approachable. His assignments and what he expects in them are very confusing, but if you utilize his office hours you'll find he is VERY helpful. He is EXTREMELY knowledgeable on the history of books and is definitely one of the best professors at the U of M.

Comment:
Michael Hancher is acutely aware of his own brilliance. He requires attendance and participation from his students but legitimately interrupts students and goes off on tangents, making it difficult to add to discussion. In theory this class would be interesting but the lack of structure makes it hard to be motivated and excited.

actually, i dont know about the course number. I took half-a-dozen classes with him, and he probably influenced me as much as any professor could. He's intelligent and kind and yet fiercely devoted to pursuing academic inquiry. This can be good and bad, but mostly for me it was wonderful.

Can't say enough about this professor. One of my favorites at the U--helpful, very thoughtful, and open to students, especially those who show an interest in the course. Highly recommended.

I *HATE* this site, it's ridiculous, but loved this prof. He is one of the last greats of a past era while still being a productive contributor to contemporary debates. It's the best of several worlds. Take a course with him while you still can! He really knows it all.

He was very knowledgeable about ' Class Literary Criticism'the material was dense & he had an ability to wade through it with his method of 'close reading'. If you are a Eng major you shld take this crse if he teaches it again.
