Definitely one of my fav professors. His teaching style is excellent and he explains everything he mentions in depth so that everyone is on the same page. He even starts the class off by briefylt reviewing where we left off, which is really helpful. He also explains concepts well in office hours. Overall, a great professor to learn chemistry with.

Best chemistry professor. Dr. Pleva explains all the concepts that students need to know in full detail, so there is no confusion. He is also very helpful in office hours and truly cares about making sure his students master the material. This class is no walk in the park, but if you study and do the practice problems he gives, you will excel!

He is awful in every way! Tough and erratic grader, confusing lecturer, and even rambles in office hours when you ask direct questions.

He has a rough exterior, but Dr. Pleva is honest to God one of the most caring professors this school has had the blessing of hosting. His grading is picky and, granted, he will deduct points even if what you have written is not wrong, but once you figure out his system you will be able to succeed in his class. Overall, a great prof and person.

Avoid at all costs. His lectures wander, old tests do not represent current tests in the slightest, and he can be unpleasant. His tests would cover 4 weeks of material and focus on one bit that was not especially emphasized in class. So you could study and be well prepared and still get a B. For the money I'm paying, this class was not worth it

Why does everyone say he's so nice? He's a grumpy old man who doesn't know how to run a class and he is far from welcoming or helpful in office hours

He is a great adviser! His class is no joke, but if you do the work you should do fine. Weekly quizzes are tough, but you don't have to study much for tests because you already know the material. True, he does favor girls and baseball players, but has been known to pad a student's final grade if they show that they want to learn and improve.

Dr. Pleva is a GREAT professor. His course is difficult (he will be the first person to tell you that), but if you put in the time and GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS you will do well. He really takes an interest in students who want to improve and do well in the class. Weekly quizzes are difficult but force you to keep up with material. Long tests.

An old-school analytical chemist who is a stickler about definitions, Pleva is a great prof for the patient, thorough student. Lectures tend to wander, but it's easy to see where he wants to go. If you see him after class, be patient and give him time to walk you through everything....he takes a lot of time to detail. Sweetest old man at W&L.

Horrible teacher. About as cold personality wise as a person can get. Unfortunately, you're going to have to take his class for most science majors at W&L, but be forewarned that you're in for an uphill battle.

i took chem 100 after taking ap chemistry (and getting a 4 on the ap exam), expecting an easy a. if you have any chemistry experience whatsoever, this class is the easiest class you will ever take. pleva takes pains to make sure everyone understands, and is a very nice man. doesn't expect a lot in lab, except that you manage not to kill anyone.

Very sweet man who means well, but his lectures are pretty wandering and useless. Class is not only optional but almost hurt my understanding of the class at times. The only way I ever did well was to study all day everyday for about a week before each test. The cold tests arent helpful, either.

This guy is the worst professor in the world. He spends the entire class period teaching literally nothing. Showing up for class would be a complete waste of time, if he didn't put his useless "nicknames" for things on his tests. He expects you to know his exact definitions of things by heart, or else you literally will fail. He sucks.
