This was an awesome class. Nancy really cares about her students and the subject. Discussion and office hours were really helpful for the assignments, which were fun and interesting. Grades are based on participation, 2 assignments, a midterm, and a take home final.

Professor Chen's class was awesome. I learned a lot from her class and about Chinese culture. Granted you must do the work and study for her class because you can get lost in the workload easily but if you keep up and study you will be fine.

This class changed my life and I am a medical anthropologist now! I never thought of medicine the way I learned to think about it in this class. I wish everyone in America could be required to take Prof. Chen's class and be challenged to think more deeply about our cultural beliefs about health/disease/illness/wellness.

Extremely difficult but interesting class. Great prof but grades very hard on the essays and there's A LOT of reading (more than you can imagine). Your grade is based on 2 papers, 1 mdterm project, final, a reading jrnal (all rdgs required) & participation. Also crazy grade scale: A=96-100, A-=92-95, B+=89-91, B=85-88, B-= 82-84, C+=80-82, C=75-79

Do not take this class if you are not interested in china. she requires us to read everything she assigns plus turn in a reading journal at the end of the quarter(impossible) good use of media though. but again ridiculous amounts of homework.

nancy is a little distant; seems to have everything filter through the TA. her lectures are very informative, however, though she doesn't have a very clear and direct lecturing voice. assignments were confusing, and she didn't seem to have time to really read some returned essays. still, class was interesting.

What she lacks in confidence she makes up for in love for the subject, props for that. However, when it comes to clarity and organization, she's all over the map. No basis to her teaching, incredibly hard to follow. Nice person, willing to negotiate exams and finals.

Nancy Chen was an awsome professor. She was very fun and passionate about her subject. It was fun being in her class and I would love to take another class with her in the future. There was a little reading, but it was interesting. She was easy to understand, very nice to approach and well organized.

I found Nancy very difficult to follow. Her powerpoints were unclear and her lecture material for an Intro class was harder than it should've been. The exams covered WAY too much material and the essay portion's topic was often obscure. Definitely tougher for an Intro class..

her class was alright. i rarely went because it made little to no sense while she was lecturing. i did enjoy the t.a. sections. chen's class was alright, but not one where you will pay attention alot. more than once i fell asleep.

Nancy Chen is a very spirited and friendly person, but she isn't the greatest lecturer. Her powerpoints might have made sense to her, but the rest of the class had a hard time following them. I imagine she performs best in a smaller classroom setting. This class had three papers, a midterm, and a final.

Nancy was nice but i went to her for help and she said she would do something and she did not keep her word. Her lectures are kind of interesting but her powerpoints suck. they are undescriptive of important materials that will almost always show up on the midterm. way to expectant for an intro class. the ta's suck for this class too.

Nancy Chen is a awesome professor. She knows her stuff and easily keeps you from falling asleep. There are a lot of long articles to read, but she pretty much summarizes them during class. There's about 3 papers 3-5pgs each.

Anthro 130G (Asian American Film and Ethnography) can be very engaging if your interested. If you haven't taken many anthro classes before, you may feel a bit lost by the terminology and nervous about approaching the fairly unstructured assignments. Take notes, they're more helpful then you think. Look for themes.

Intro to Cultural Anthro was interesting, but that was despite Nancy Chen. As a teacher she was not very good, her lectures dragged on and were not usually engaging. Also, she had this quaver in her voice that made it sound like she was always about to cry-- very distracting. The materials were fascinating, as were the guest lectures and movies

REally interesting, but sometimes lectures drug on. The projects were the best ever assigned: do a project on something about consumption......basically a project on anything! The readings were really great too.
