Comment:

Great lectures that go deeper into the material. Also enjoys going off on tangent discussions that usually are just as cool. Don't expect a gimme if it's obvious that you're not putting a moderate amount of effort into your work. Would take another class with this guy.

Comment:

His lectures are very interesting and insightful. That being said he can kind of be intense at times but he means well. The tests are hard and you get what you prepare for, but if you take good notes it won't be a problem. You'll do fine so long as you pay attention and do the homework/readings. This class is totally worth it and I learned a lot.

Dr. Van Leeuwen is an extremely intelligent professor but struggled to bring it down to the level of my old testament class. The lectures were the most boring I have ever experienced and halfway through the semester half of the class had already dropped out. We were also tested on things we had not covered. Smart guy, bad professor.

God-awful. Literally yelled at the class because his parents who only had a 7th grade education knew/read the Bible better than soon-to-be college graduates. Rambles. Admittedly incoherent. When a professor instructs you regarding a paper that "there isn't necessarily a method" and that "we figure out what we think in our rambling" -> no good.

Had him for both ot and nt, great prof, challenging but brilliant. Really makes you form your own opinion instead of shoving his in your face. Defiantly know his stuff, you learn alot. If you do the work youll do fine, if your having trouble he will help. Take him, he really helps you think differently.

Possibly the most frustrating teacher I've ever had. Info was very interesting, but nearly impossible to take notes from his very disconnected, rambling lectures. Unwilling to consider alternate viewpoints or even engage with them. Frequently disrespectful to students. Will def avoid this prof in the future and recommend the same to others.

A brilliant man, but doesn't know how to properly share his knowledge in form of a lecture. His books are fantastic though. Not exactly arrogant, but is not at all very respectful to students. At all. A good 20 minutes of our 50 minute class would be spent on him correcting us in some way.

he's amazing and uber-smart. at first you might think he's arrogant about his knowledge and his accomplishments but as the class goes on you realise how much he really cares about us, his students, and how much effort he puts into our education. he's all about going the extra mile! i loved this class!

This prof is bad news. Arrogant, confusing, gives the most difficult exams i have ever taken over stuff he doesnt talk about in class, & assigns impossible papers that require vast amounts of non-sensical reading. Nice, but an awful prof!

There's few people I like more than Dr. V. He's incredibly genuine and caring, has a great sense of humor, and is of course brilliant. He's scatterbrained, so sometimes he's a little difficult to follow, but mostly, he's just inspiring. Don't know what I'd do without him!

He scared me a lot at first, but it turns out he just takes a genuine interest in his students' academic (and otherwise) success. He really cares, is extremely intelligent, loves what he does.... I'd totally date him if I was old, too.
