Katsushima-sensei is the best. I'm a business major and not taking this for credit, but I've already signed up for next semester. She gives specific feedback on homework. Even though it is a language class, she still teaches us a lot of Japanese Culture. I will continue taking 301 if it fits in my schedule.

First Year Seminar: Intro to Japanese Culture. This professor is very kind & caring; Two tests overall, and they are based on memorization rather than logical concepts or knowledge on topics. However, it is overall a really easy class. There are a lot of homework, but very light weight and not too difficult.

Katsushima is one of the greatest professors I have had. She's very hilarious, adorable, and very understanding. If you have any issues regarding tests or homework, she is always willing to extend based on your circumstances.

I LOVED her! She is super nice and approachable, is very helpful and clear when she is teaching. She definitely cares for her students a lot, and it shows. She reviews everything you need to know for tests the class before to make sure you understand it. Assigns homework pages but it's all helpful for practice, never busy work. Fun class.

Great teacher that's actually FROM Japan- you know you are learning from the source! Class is easy if you study, as she tells you everything you need to know for a test, and goes over the pages you need to study in class- Midterm and finals are in groups where you speak out a dialogue you create with a partner. I enjoyed her teaching style! :)

I have learned a lot of Japanese from this class so far. As long as you complete and put effort in your homework, you are given full credit. She gives many quizzes--1-2 a week so make sure you're ready to study. It's all about memorization so you need to put some time into this class no doubt. She is very nice and willing help her students.

This class is just amazing-- Katsushima-sensei makes it really enjoyable and super easy to understand! (A note: PLEASE do not take this class if you just like anime and/or video games. Seriously, spare us.) But honestly, just practice your Japanese like she says (use the flashcards, for sure), study well, and you'll do fine in her class! :)

Honestly, Im not sure you could do a whole lot better than sensei. As someone who is not typically very good at learning foreign languages, there is no way I would be taking Japanese from anybody but sensei. You do learn a lot in her class, which means you do a fair amount of work, but I have never felt the workload was the least bit overwhelming.

If you have even the slightest interest in Japanese I would recommend taking Sensei's class. Lots of work and lots of quizzes. Go to class and study. Japanese is a difficult language and can only be mastered through practice. Sensei will also always give you extra help if you need it. She's total doll.

Sensei is awesome! She's such a sweet, funny Japanese lady. As far as intellect is concerned, she is a very competent English speaker and teaches Japanese w/ humor (and not intentionally! this is the best part...)

Japanese is the hardest language to learn at GU, but sensei keeps the class well-paced, and if you keep up on the homework and STUDY for her tests (they are challenging) you will get an A. Go to class! It's fun and missing out will hurt you alot. I definitely recommend taking this class!!

The 101 class was rather boring. The class moves very slowly. Regardless of whether you think it is hard or easy, the class didn't seem to be very useful. Your money would be better spent buying a plane ticket to Japan and emmersing yourself in the culture/language.

The class was really easy, even as a freshman in a 200 level class, but I had taken four years of Japanese before college. She's a wonderful teacher and an awesome person. The class does move quick. Do the homework!

Sensei's class is very easy. I had a few friends from Hawaii, and they told me, "You should see how much harder it is at UoH." There's only one tip: Do your work. Languages are learned via practicing, and it's like this everywhere regardless of what language it is.

This class was very difficult for me. Most of the other people seemed to have some experience in Japanese. Grading on quizes and tests is VERY harsh, class moves and a fast clip. I don't know what the other reviewers are talking about... her English is deplorable, and she speaks with a heavy accent.

Katsushima-Sensei is a very competent English speaker and, of course, knows her Japanese perfectly. The class maintains a very quick pace, but it's not difficult if you keep up with the work. She is a great teacher.
