I signed up for this class because the course seemed interesting (Romance Languages) and he had good ratings. But, I would not recommend. He uploaded the syllabus after Week 1 and then from Weeks 0-2 he assigned no homework. Then on Week 3, (the Saturday before Week 3, when it's too late to drop) he assigned 2 HWs and a Midterm in one week(MWF).

Super interesting and fun class, but catered to Vietnamese students since majority are Vietnamese, which makes sense. If you're not, be prepared to study double the time since you gotta start from scratch. You learn a lot, but would recommend taking it only if you have previous exposure/practice and want a chill class, otherwise good luck.

Great and funny professor. He truly is caring about his students and often tries to engage students to get involved in class. One of the few professors I really loved at UCI! He loves to answers questions and displays a great attitude when it comes to teaching. He sometimes goes on tangents on random fun facts he likes to share with his students.

Hes my favorite professor here at UCI. Never have I missed class. He has his own perks and quirks. On some days, he goes really fast and its kind of difficult to catch up if youre not paying attention. Hes super caring and he loves questions. The tests were easy but I am Vietnamese and so it wasnt that bad whenever he spoke Vietnamese.

I really like him as his passion for Vietnamese encourages me to work hard in class even if it gets harder. Not only that, he is extremely helpful as he manages to answer all questions while having a sense of humor provide life lessons in the process. His office hours varies, but he is always open for questions during, before, and, after class.

Professor Tran is caring and passionate! His lectures are lacked with culture and wit. This course is a great way to learn about Vietnamese literature, traditions, superstitions and sometimes religions as well. If you genuinely try, he will help you succeed!

Tri is very knowledgeable and makes learning Vietnamese easy. His pace is fair and he has a lot of activities that requires the class to speak Vietnamese. The midterm and final consists of three parts: verbal (with a partner), dictation, and packet. You're allowed to make a few mistakes because participation and homework will buffer your grade.

Prof Tran does go fast in this class, but for a good reason. Most of the students who take this class already know some viet. I don't. I'm latino. Even though it was hard, I can now read speak and write well enough for others to understand me =]! He's really nice and helpful! A tip for the nonheritage students: study VOCAB!! Most important thing.

Always bring the book! His notes are very clear and he always answers questions. The hardest problem would probably be pronunciation. If you do not have ANY prior Vietnamese knowledge, this class is hard. I never spoke Vietnamese at home, only heard it in church or family gatherings. Still, he's knowledgeable and very funny. Good class.

My household speaks Viet so this class is very easy for me. However, if you don't know Viet at all, it will be VERY hard. He teachers to cater to those who know the language already. Teaches alphabet first day and goes on to reading words the next. Moves way too fast for someone with no Viet knowledge.

This class is uncomfortably tough for those who does not speak vietnamese fluently even though this class has take-home midterm and final.Very consistently lazy professor. He often dismisses class 10-15 mins early. He also cancels the class 4 times throughout the quarter. You will not receive your midterm until week 9 of the quarter <to be continued>

He teaches culture instead of focusing on grammer & word usage. This class is easy for those who already speak Viet. It can be quite difficult for those who don't speak it reguarly; he gives very little direction, and expects you to read the book and figure out grammer/word usage on your own. He's helpful though, so ask him if you don't understan

Thay Tri is super nice and funny. Only, tests are uber hard! If you're good at memorizing vocab, independent grammar study with classmates with occasional help from him, translating and remembering passages and proverbs, take him. Class is mandatory and book use is too. If not, he knocks off a grade. smart guy knows 4+ languages; i recommend him

was a pretty critical guy, and i think my vietnamese got worse taking his class. he doesn't always prep and likes making snide comments about everything. not horrible when actually does teach, but most of the time he'll just let you do busy work.

Really organized teacher, good for the vietnamese intro series and definately take the vietnamese linguistics class. it'll help your vietnamese way more than a second year of regular vietnamese! he can be pretty crass though- a forewarning.
