Comment:

Wendell is an excellent instructor for this course. Coming from a non-music background, he explained key topics clearly, repeatedly and usually in a variety of ways. Weekly quizzes made up 50% of the final grade and the topics of quizzes were well covered ahead of quiz time. Go to class, participate and study/practise and it's an easy A.

Comment:

Wendell is a true gem, I enjoyed waking up early to go to his lectures as they always left me in a good mood. The class is all about participation and you should really care for music if you take it. Theres a quiz every week and final, if you study the textbook you will be okay. I had no theory experience and had to study a lot, but was worth it!

Comment:

He think he is funny. Not respect to students, awful joke maker. If you dont have any music background, dont take his class, he assumes people can understand his poor lecture. Always trying to trick his students on test and the attendance. He will try to catch those who skip the class as many as possible. The worst instructor ever.

Comment:

Wendell is a great musician but was a terrible professor during my time as a student. He was inconsistent in his instruction, unpredictable in his temperament and prone to favoritism. He often made sexist, racist and generally inappropriate remarks. He deflected any criticism of his behavior by calling it "humor". Go anywhere else to study.

Comment:

Wendell Clanton is a phenomenal musician, and one the most intelligent men I've ever met. Because he studied under the best saxophone professor in the USA, he holds all of his students to a world class standard of performance. His knowledge of music, its history, & of artistry is comprehensive. A warm, caring man who only wants success for you.

Wendall Clanton is an PHENOMENAL Saxophone professor. Yes, he does have high standards, and can be tough if you're not putting in enough time and effort, but isn't that what you want from a University prof? You're paying full tuition to have someone help and guide you to be the best you can be. Caring, intelligent and witty, he is quite the mentor.

Comment:

He is pretty tough on students even though this class (Vocal Jazz) has numbers of non-music majors. However, he brings us together and encourages us to try our best. Sometimes it is stressful to have "off music by next week" request while having loads of other homework from different courses on the way.

Obviously if you are a saxophonist, you can't avoid him but if you have the option to not take classes with him, I wouldn't. His interactions with students are not professional. For example: He has called students names and used discriminatory language in the past and partied with students. If you can go to another school for saxophone, do it.

Wendell is a very hard and inconsistant marker. You are not allowed to have your own opinion. You can not trust him. My love of music has been tarnished and he is the reason why.

If you're looking for an all-round musical mentor it should be Wendell. He does everything well, including teach - he just makes so much sense! Great motivator, wonderful personality, one of the most helpful and caring people I've ever met.
