Probably not the best prof if you aren't good at chem or need a lot of support, his lectures are scattered. But the exams truly are not that hard, they're almost identical to the practice tests he gives. And if you need even more help you can use premed411. Didn't use the book much or take many notes and did very well.

Ridiculous amount of extra work. No multiple choice on tests, only occasionally gives partial credit. No powerpoints, writes everything in class in handwriting that may as well be hieroglyphics. Won't give straight answers if you ask him about test. I know chem profs are slim pickings at UM but avoid him if you can.

He is clearly a very smart man, but the absolute worst professor I have ever taken hands down. His lectures are super off topic and in general useless and his tests are all free response with no partial credit. In order to do well you have to teach yourself the material, but the one redeeming quality is that he does put lots of practice online.

Does not form coherent sentences most of the time, has unreadable handwriting, is v unhelpful. Was funny at first until I realized he'd taught us none of the material on test. Youll have to teach yourself everything; going to class is a waste of time. Has a test on every chapter; all are long, short answer (yet doesn't give partial credit), & HARD.

No matter what you do nothing improves. He literally blabs on and expect you to follow when it is almost impossible to. His test are super hard even if you study for 10s of hours. Literally the worst professor I've had as he gives no partial credit because he grades it only if the answer is correct. Don't believe the other reviews. His class sucks.

On top of his incomprehensible lectures, Hoff gives 6 exams in the 1 semester (not including the final). He also does not offer partial credit, but his exams ARE NOT multiple choice. I knew the information pretty solidly but that did not show in my grade because I would lose huge amounts of points of silly mistakes.

Comment:
Hoff doesn't make powerpoints or use a microphone, so his lectures consist of him rambling about either 1 single problem or a superficial topic. He will occasionally write on the board, but his handwriting is so bad that it's useless. Just today he admitted that the lectures are pointless and all of the learning is done on the students free time.

There were two professors for CHM 112 this semester: Hoff and Falcao. Take Falcao. I cannot stress this enough. Hoff has 6 exams (not including final), which wouldn't be a problem if they all weren't free response and partial credit was a thing. In order to do well, do his old exams. He repeats the same type of problems but with different numbers.

Hoff is super quirky--he literally will take his belt off in the middle of lecture... but he is super smart and knows the material well. Tests are not easy, but doable if you read the textbook and study a little. Going to office hours will also help.

Horrible lectures-I didn't learn anything from him. The book will give you the basics but don't expect exam questions from there either. The only resources for the exams are the lab book problems & PreMed411. Also, he's completely unavailable outside of class (barely any office hrs). Exam averages are usually in the 60s.

Incapable of teaching! Lectures: disorganized, useless Handwriting: almost unreadable. Tests: entirely free response and NO PARTIAL CREDIT. No attendance but he sometimes asks questions about random stuff from lecture on the test. That being said, it is still easy to get an A if you read the book and use premed411 but you wont learn much.

Hoff's an awesome professor- he's incredibly funny if you like dry humor. His lectures are all over the place sometimes, but there's so much material out there that it's easy to learn on your own. His exams very closely resemble his practice examsexams on premed411. Easy A if you do the right things.

Very funny and nice guy. Class isn't difficult but you are pretty much on your own for tests as the lectures aren't terribly helpful. Premed 411 is a must

Hoff is nice and an OK professor. Attendance is not mandatory, and not necessary either. If you read the chapters and understand everything, you'll be fine. Do the practice tests on premed, you will get an A. Tests are not multiple choice, and there are 67 with a drop.

I love Hoff! He is such a 60s hippy druggie and he says hilarious and trippy things every class. Great class to go high to. If you rework his old exams you will be fine but you need to fully understand the concepts to get an A. No curves but he does give points for working out problems on the test

At first, I was excited to take Dr. Hoff because I heard that he was a great professor. His course is not very well organized and is hard to follow. My time would have been much better spent reading the textbook than going to class. I am sure that the only reason I did well was because I reworked multiple old exams. Exams are all free response.

His lectures are kind of all over the place, but on the tests there's always at least one question from the lecture. Not really an easy A. You have to know your stuff, but for the most part know premed411 and you're good. Final was brutal though, so I'd recommend doing well in the class beforehand. 6 tests, 1 drop, 1 final.

Not really an easy A. You definitely have to study the book and premed411 to do well on the exams. His lectures are close to being useless (and his handwriting is horrible), but he's a pretty cool/funny professor. Six exams (one is dropped), a final, and a homework packet due on the day of the final.

His lectures are incredibly difficult to understand, which wouldn't bother me if I could just read the book and teach myself. Unfortunately, his exam questions deviate from the text far too often. The ONLY way you can get an A in this class is by memorizing old exams on pre-med 411. Obviously, you won't actually learn the material from doing this.

Although I'm likely getting an A/A- in the course, I have learned nothing. His lectures are terribly disorganized and incomprehensible. He only gets good ratings because he rehashes past years' exams, yet the course is still frustratingly difficult due to his ludicrous grading methods: No partial credit, -10 for each tiny calculation error.
