Well, she knows her stuff. A walking encyclopedia on all things Austen. Poor woman has no idea how to teach, though. Rambles on repetitively through lectures, assigns papers with no real subject in mind except the most vague ("give me 4 pages on Emma," etc.). Comment:

The class setting was very chill - most of the time we talked about Jane Austen, writing and ourselves. She lets you "bank" missed classes by attending an on-campus lecture, and also was helpful in tightening up our essays and seeing us in conferences.

This woman was infuriating. Her grading style is atrocious, she cares more about the structure you use than the actual content and quality of the paper. She wasn't helpful at all, because even after doing what she said, if you use the word 'is' more than once you get a C. I learned nothing and the books were terrible.

She's alright. I wouldn't say she's fascinating, but she's friendly enough and knows what she's talking about. Just don't get her started on Jane Austen. She can also be a very harsh grader.

Carol is such a sweet woman and I really enjoyed her class. I have never seen someone as into Jane Austen as she is! Speak your mind and show her you care about the work and you will be just fine in her class. Take advantage of conferences to revise your papers! She will help you out if you come with questions and talk to her.

Comment:

Carol is an amazing professor. She is incredibly well-versed, especially on Austen. She is also one of the only literature profs at Goucher with ANY teaching training. She wants to hear what her students have to say and is willing to help 100% of the way. Show her that you care and can think and her class will be enjoyable. Why isn't she full-time?

I can't believe she's a college professor. She didn't know what rife meant, or what situational irony was. I just stopped going to class because I was fed up with the shoddy teaching ability and low intellect of this woman.

She is a very nice person but as a teacher she is unfair. She had us tell her what books we LIKE to read and she used mine to tell me that I had to GROW UP! The novels we read in class are amazing but she grades very hard.

She talked about nothing relevant in class, and then when she graded papers, she gave bad grades for no reason that was apparent in her comments or marks on the paper, avoid her class at all costs, i learned NOTHING.

This woman is completely in love with her own voice. Her grading policy is horrible, with no reason as to why you recieved the given grade. Subject matter is utter nonsense. You'll do fine if you write exactly what she wants to hear, but if she finds your opinion conflicting with hers...god help you.

Pippen is a relentless knowitall. She loves to show off her 'knowledge' while quashing real discussion. She doesn't teach you much and she doesn't remember what she's taught from one class to another because she rambles so often.
