Comment:

Uses fear to make you comply. Not difficult, but unfair expectations. He does not stay for studio time. He doesn't teach, he yells, "You are uneducated! Get educated!" He contradicts himself. He says, "Use high quality materials!" Then is ok with crayons, chalk in drawing projects. Does not demo drawing techniques but demands skill. AWFUL!

I don't recommend taking his class because during this course you have to due to 8 art drawing and 3 (4-5pages)art paper, and I don't even know how he grades my every drawing and papers(because I don't have any feedback from him)... It seems the grade is based on his mood......

The professor is good, and he cares and helps students. But, I don't think I learn many things in the class. 2D is diverse and fun, however, we had four same projects. Only the topic was different; the process of doing them all were same. Making 3 sketches, carving and printing. Also, I think the book he assigned is unrelated to 2D.

Definitely take his class if you want to improve on your art portfolio because he really cares about his student and will give good feedback on portfolios. Love his class as his assignments were interesting and taught me how to use colors. A lot of the times he cut classes short to let us do art at home if we wanted.

One of the best art teacher ever. Rodriguez is very inspirational, he makes you fall in love with art. He is very helpful and he is willing to help at any time. Always smiling and with a great attitude. The way he teaches you is amazing. If you want to take arts make sure to go in one of his classes.

Eugene reignited my love for the arts when my inspiration was at an all time low. He really cares about his students and if you don't put the work in, he will call you out on it. He genuinely cares about his students and wants to see them become successful artists. He's definitely the one you want to take if you want to have good portfolio pieces.

Eugene is the most inspirational art teacher I've had at DeAnza. He requires you to read relevant articles and essays about pop culture, and how to talk about issues through art. He will always push you to do more, and break from your comfort zone but this can be extremely inspirational. Word of advice, DO NOT have your phone out during lecture.

the difficult part of this class was coming with ideas rather than the art itself. he does not grade based on realism, but you can't be sloppy with your art either. he challenges you as an artist and how you can use your art to show your ideas, depict social, economic, etc. issues. critiques in class, 4 projects. he is nice but can be a bit harsh

Eugene assigns interesting projects that are mostly up to you--no boring still life unless you like that. We read articleschapters and write 12 page responses regularly, but it's on interesting topics like politicstechartculture so it isn't boring. He also cuts class time in half a lot so you leave early most of the time. Best art professor.

From my experience at De Anza, Eugene is one of the best professors so far! I would retake his classes if I could do that. He inspires. No, it sounds boring. He INSPIRES. His classes are really interesting for anyone who enjoys art. Yes, you need to work, but it's worth it. Take his class and enjoy!

Comment:

Eugene is an awesome teacher. He is very funny and easygoing but he will get pissed if you are late or fail to notify him ahead of time. The only thing you should worry about is getting your work done. Do NOT do it the night before. Other than that he is a rather lenient grader and a fun professor who's not afraid to give his opinions.

I took beginning drawing from him, and I actually got more out of this class than I expected. He has a strict attendance and late policies, so if you are one of those people who just can't be punctual, you might want to consider taking another professor. I did all the assignments and completed my portfolio, I got an A for the class.

Hi Eugene, I know you're reading this! Everyone, he is such a nice guy, if you want to learn anything about art he is the one to take. I am majoring in nursing, and only needed one art class to fill up my credits and I am glad I took it with him. It's very challenging but he doesn't expect you to be perfect. Goodluck!

People complain how he has us just draw for the majority of the class, but most artists can tell you that practice is the best way to improve. I had him for both beginning drawing & today's working artist, & he is genuinely a nice guy with the best intentions to prepare you for the real world. Although he seems really strict, it's more tough love.
