Comment:
Joel is a good lecturer, but the class is much too difficult for a general course. Attendence isn't required for points but necessary to pass. The class and readings are all taught through a textbook he wrote. He repeats himself and talks very condisending if you make a mistake. I spent more time doing homework than actually learning.

In professor Sipress' class, it will take some effort. But the way he formats his history class is the most effective I've ever seen. I can guarantee I won't forget anything I've learned in his class.

He repeated himself a lot in class. Attendance is not required, but necessary to pass the class. In the beginning he was nicer and more helpful, but as the semester went on, he became more strict and almost rude. Taught a 100 level class as a 400 level class. Not impressed overall.

One of the best teachers at UWS. His classes are demanding and has high expectations for his students, but if you do the readings and participate you'll do o.k and learn a lot. I took several of his classes and enjoyed all of them. Great guy!

Joel knows a lot about history and loves teaching! Doing the readings in his class are mandatory. He is open to other viewpoints, but you must back them up with plenty of evidence. He really teaches you how to write a quality paper.

Joel is a good professor but like the other professors at UW Superior, he expects attendance and participation. He gives out a lot of reading but little else in way of homework. Keep up with the reading, and your fine. The other people who complained about his difference in opinions need to make sure they had some evidence to back their argument.

Unwilling to accept ANY opinion other than his own. Gave me low grade on an essay because I said Ida B Wells was a feminist and he disagreed. Also, refused to see the connection between King and passive resistance. Called him 'an active army general'. Parrot his opinions in your essays and your grade is gold. Disagree with him, expect snidenes

One of the most difficult courses at UW; however, I agree with the previous poster that he is also the one of the best instuctors. However, he grades very tough on the essays but it is understandable. If you are paying attention class, he gives good outlines for the essays. No tests, but lots of discussions...

One of the best instructors at UW! He engages the students in very thoughtful discussions and his class is NEVER boring. His formal essays are a challenge, though, but with hard work, it can be done successfully! As far as the readings, there are only a couple segments that are extraordinarily long.

I agree with the previous poster but I would add he seems a bit high-strung at times. Although, to be fair, the reading assignments ease off late in the semester...
