He goes around the room once and you have a conversation. He gives you a take home final. I never really learned anything about Japanese and I passed with an A. There is barely any homework and he never grades it. He comments on it. You don't really have to study for it. I don't recommend him. Just buy the book and study yourself.

A fairly strange class. Not nearly as rigid or structured as most, there's usually no tests and homework is short and easy. Kalyan sensei tends to teach straight out of the book and very rarely does any hard exercises. An easy A, but you won't learn much unless you put forth your own effort.

He's a great guy and is very enthusiastic about Japan. My first semester with him was wonderful, but during the second semester all we did was read the book nearly every class. As I said, wonderful guy, but he would benefit on improving his teaching skills. Referencing a text book is fine during class, but I can read it at home.

Professor Dasgupta has a great personality, but his teaching skills are somewhat lacking. You will only learn Japanese well if you're INTERESTED in it. You have to take the initiative outside of class to study and retain the vocabulary/grammar rules. The homework is very easy, and you will most likely receive an A in his Japanese classes. He's fun!

Dasguptasensei has always put hsi students before anything else. He opened a Japanese conversation club with many of the students studying here from Japan to help his students learn; he pushed to get a Japanese tutor for those who need it; and he has tales of living in Japan for decades to help with culture studies.
