Comment:

Prof. Ham teaches sociology using real-world applications. His students were required to read and write two papers for class every week, but the papers were short and the work was doable. The class is discussion based, which is great, but people have to participate. As long as you prove that you are doing the work, this class is not hard.

He is a nice guy but his teaching style is quirky (and not in a fun way). Lots of reading and even more writing! You're required to read at least 30-50 pages of dense readings per week, along with two 2-3 pages long (he really wants 4-5) essays. I only enjoyed the class b/c I love anthro. still interesting at times but you don't learn a lot.

HUGE workload for intro class. BORING class. you would expect to do a lot in a 3 hour class... but you don't. you do not do anything at all except discuss an article. 2 papers due every week with other readings on top of it. Hated this class so much... AVOID if possible. But he is a nice guy.

Good god what a nightmare this class was. Ham, despite being a nice guy, is a terrible professor. His work load for an introductory class was outrageous. The worst part is, you can't even read his handwriting when he gives you feedback on papers. Lectures were confusing and it was never quite clear what he was looking for in assignments. Terrible.

If you are taking intro to soan just to get rid of a requirement, don't take it with Ham. The class is long and boring and pointless. Two papers are due every week and a big paper at the end. He never uses the textbook and is just overall frustrating. If you can avoid him, do it.

Never mentioned one single thing from the textbook. His class was so useless. His grading is off. He gave me back my papers with coffee stains on them, wrinkled- he was careless. Not sure why he is teaching.

Ham is hilarious. He makes the classroom a great and comfortable place to be in. He's very different than any other teacher I've had. He also offers a great perspective on things. Highly recommended.

This guy is awesome. He is totally comfortable, creates an awesome atmosphere, teaches us to think for ourselves. He knows his stuff, and you learn without always being aware of it. He's cool. He makes you write and think hard, but is so worth it. Not really hard either. Great guy.

Fabulous, well-traveled, and educated professor. His classes are very comfortable and relaxed. He is an easy grader at least at the into level. He really expanded my horizons.
