Lise's class pushed me to be a better writer, editor, and creative mind and I will forever be grateful. As long as you do the work, you'll get a good grade. Read the text. Write a well thought-out piece. She's very personable and cares. She always made sure our pieces still reflected us. I like her humor, but see how some might see her as dry.

Lise is a tough grader, so if you take this class, ensure that you have skin thick enough to handle the critiques. She won't hesitate to be honest with you when something isn't working. For that reason, she pushed me more as a writer than any professor ever has. Given the opportunity, I would gladly take another class of hers.

Lise is amazing. Ive become a much better writer thanks to her. She is easily available outside of class & will help you work out issues with your stories. Her class is fun and her writing exercises are very helpful. Im taking her again.

Lise is an incredible Professor. Shes a tough grader and expects a lot from her students. She seems tough at first but she is a very understanding and caring professor. She wants her students to succeed. Lise has been one of my favorite professors at Emerson. She gives incredible feedback and pushes you. I would 100% take this class again.

Lise was ok but kind of a pain. Her pet peeves about literature really limited what we were all allowed to write about. She gave us a list, A WHOLE LIST, of things were could not mention in our stories. Her comments weren't always helpful either since in them she'd point out a problem, but offer no solution.

I took two classes with Lise. She's helpful sometimes but very pessimistic about writing in general. She's published several novels, but she'll make you feel like it's an impossible process. She's kind of a sad person and tries too hard to be the funny, relevant professor kids love. She won't respect your opinion if it doesn't coincide with hers.

Lise is great. I learned so much from her feedback, and her advice improved my stories a ton. I appreciated how organized she always was. The workshops were great. She is caring, even if she comes across as stern. Highly recommend!

I really enjoyed Intro to Fiction Writing! A lot of the class is workshop, which was really helpful. She gives you her own critiques but doesn't require that you follow through with anything she suggests. The class is more about improving your own story and helping others improve theirs. She seems cold at first but she's actual sweet.

Comment:
Lise is disrespectful of any opinions that do not coincide with hers and she will rudely interrupt any student she does not agree with. The environment in her class was very cold. Her comments on projects aren't very helpful; all she tends to focus on is characterization. She doesn't do much actual teaching outside of discussing short stories.

Lise is an incredible professor. She's one of my favorites, and though there is a workload I went from barely writing to being confident enough to send work out (after another thirteen revisions, of course).

I do not recommend this professor. I do not respect her as a resource or peer in my field at all. She will provide extensive feedback on your work but my general experience with her was that she was honestly not very intelligent or skilled at writing or appreciative of varying writing styles. She was easily confused and the class was a joke.

Sends back very helpful comments and is great at leading workshops. I didn't always agree with her criticisms (the insistence that your characters' families should always have a presence in stories was particularly tiresome), but who's ever going to agree completely with a workshop professor? Great overall.

She is the best writing teacher ever. She tells you about the real world in all honesty. She's fair. She doesn't accept late work and she doesn't like it when you're absent but just do your best and you'll do fine.

One of the best workshop prof. I've ever had. I took her for Adv. creative writing and Sem.in Fiction, and I can honestly say my writing has improved b/c of it. Lise doesn't sugar coat, but your writing will only improve because of it, and she is always respectful in her critiques. I'd recommend her to anyone.

She is very knowledgeable and you will get to read some interesting stuff, but she is strict especially attendance and tardies. Her comments and the workshop are great but her personality is a bit quirky. She'll seem like she doesn't care and she will be 100% honest (good & bad) . If you have tough skin and want to be a better writer, take her.

One of her key rules is 'no science fiction, no fantasy, here we write high literature'. I guess if you write real world works, no absurdity, no magical realism, no weirdness in the real world, she's fine. But to those who do, she's pretty bad. A lot of her criticism is to make it more like her writing, rather than good writing.

Lise is a talented and intelligent professor. She may be a bit opinionated, but what writer isn't? Her comments are useful, her editing usually spot-on, and her workshops foster creativity and discussion. My writing has certainly improved. Definitely a prof. worth checking out.

Haines is a wonderful writing teacher. She can seem a little dry at first, but she is really very concerned about her students and the progress they make as writers. She puts so much work into editing your stories! Her workshop was a really great experience. I would recommend her to anyone who's not afraid to hear it like it is.
