Two large exams, midterm and final, that are 100% essay and based off of what you have read up until that point. Overall, a wonderful experience. He is kind, funny and honest about YA Literature and literature in general. Make sure you attend and stay on top of your readings and you'll pass, no problem. Discussions are fun and enlightening!

I have had Dr. Cowlishaw in several classes now. Great teacher. His teaching style and assignments are simple, but you learn a lot. One quiz a week, five questions each and easy to pass if you read the material. Quizzes, midterm, and final are the only grades. He counts off if you miss over three classes.

Very kind professor, and the lectures are so interesting and engaging! Content is wonderful, the assignments are challenging but not impossible and I feel as though he was truly testing my knowledge and comprehension instead of my regurgitation. Don't skip class, though. 4 or so absences equal a fail no matter what.

Professor Cowlishaw really knows his stuff, and he's very passionate about what he does. He always goes over the material we read in depth in class. There are pop quizzes, I believe he does them once per week. They're five points each, tests are about 50 points, and you can go to his movie nights once a month to replace a quiz grade.

Grammar was hard for me but he went above and beyond to help our study group (student formed) by giving extra sentences to diagram with answer key to check if we'd done it right. LOTS OF DIAGRAMMING! Know your in depth parts of speech and it'll help immensely. Took him for world lit, very easy if you stay on top of the reading. 2 words: AUDIO BOOK

I absolutely LOVED Dr. Cowlishaw's class and actually looked forward to going (weird, I know). Be prepared to read, obviously being a literature class you read several books, but they are all very interesting. If you're a reader, you'll love that your homework is to read novels. The class discussions are real and keep you involved. Great class!

I hated his class. His quizzes were easy if you took the time to read what was assigned, which I did, but I found his lectures completely random and his tests were hard.

This was one of my all time favorite classes and the third time I have had him as a professor. He is always super willing to help with whatever you need and loves feedback in classes. Gives quizzes but nothing too difficult just read the assigned books. I love this class and would take it again in a heartbeat!

Took Dr. Cowlishaw for Young Adult Lit! Loved the class! Be prepared to read, though! It's a book a week! Book quiz every week, but they're SUPER easy and basic questions. But all the books (even though some were out of my comfort zone) were excellent! Dr. Cowlishaw knows how to make class interesting and enjoyable. Encourages class participation.

He has a very dry sense of humor and puts it into your homework assignments. He grades pretty nicely. He likes to play, in his words, "guess whats in my head." If you miss 5 classes he will make you drop the class and pulls you out into the hall in front of everyone.

Cowlishaw is definitely a teacher worth taking. He is smart, nice, and extremely helpful in class. The only things that can be kind of irritating are the large reading assignments and the lectures that can sometimes be kind of boring. He explains the material very well and he is ALWAYS willing to help you succeed. Great teacher.

I can't say enough good things about Dr. Cowlishaw. I don't think I've ever had a professor as genuinely willing to help students succeed. As long as you attend, speak up in class, and keep up with the assigned readings, you'll be just fine.

If you are interested in literature, then you will enjoy this class. If you're like me and find it boring, then you will have a hard time.I'm not doing well because I wasn't doing the assigned readings. I only took this course because the Food and Culture teacher is terrible. So in conclusion, do not take this course unless you like literature.

As long as you read the stories, you'll do good. However, his lectures get pretty boring, and he tends to go off on tangents. So as long as you read and show up to class you should pass with no problem.

He gives some of the best lectures I have heard. His intelligence goes beyond that of most professors. He not only knows about Literature, but he certainly knows how to share his knowledge with students in an interesting manner and without talking down to them. He is a very kind and easy going person. I will take as many of his classes as possible.

More concerned with being liked by students than with teaching. It's fun (like a bookclub) but college is supposed to be about learning. He also talks department politics with students, which drives me nuts; we shouldn't be asked to take sides. And his attendance policy is stupid, but it's not like he applies it anyway--unless he doesn't like you.
