Reading what other students have written, I agree that Professor Hall is not an easy grader. If you write a crappy essay, he will call you out on it. But he also allows rewrites until your essay earns an A. Worked for me. Some students aren't used to having their writing criticized or asked to support their opinions. And some are just lazy.

I have some major reservations with Hall. While he does choose interesting literature to read, he manages to spend twenty minutes answering only one question someone has. The title of 'World Lit' is misleading seeing as all the literature we read is only from India. He corrects your essays with his opinions instead of helping you state yours.

If you remember the rules for writing literary analysis, and apply them, then he isn't really that hard on the papers. He lets you rewrite every paper, so after you get it back, go see him and he'll basically tell you what he wants to hear. If you don't organize, aren't concise, and have a high-school level thesis, then yes, he's tough.

He seems pretty nice, and he is, but he grades VERY hard - much harder than is necessary. He's very bad at giving helpful criticism, BUT he is good at giving you snarky/mean comments in e-mails and on paper. His class is interesting, no doubt - he knows a lot - but he's very bad when it comes to grading and providing feedback.

Comment:

There is always a great deal of reading, but if you plan ahead it's manageable. The papers are almost always short (2-3 pages), but he's very particular about the argument being concise, articulate and well organized (obviously, because it's an English class). I would definitely take him again, and I think he looks just like Ernest Hemingway :)
