Comment:

Professor Viles was the worst professor I've ever had. He would never explain assignments, never responded to emails, this instructions were written in riddles and his class was a complete waste of time. Half the time it seemed like he didn't even know what he was talking about. I would not recommend this class for anyone.

I have taken two, 115 and 121, writing classes of his. There is a lot of room in his class, and does not immaturely discriminate. But do not expect an A if you miss more than 3 of classes. And yes, he is Native American and will let you know. Don't be intimidated by his cultural identity. I'm not, so I'm taking another class of his. My third A.

Comment:

Dr. Viles is a genius. Simple. Geniuses of his caliber tend to be highly eccentric, to say the least. I LOVED his class, and had no trouble at all communicating with him. He was incredibly fair about late or absent for serious reasons! I can understand how he would be difficult for someone who struggles with reading and writing though. Overall, A+!

As an international student and non-native speaker of English, for me I think this class is worth taking. first, theres no test; there are only 3 big projects (more than 300 words only!). there is weekly assignments, and i always do the easiest tasks which are journal. i just summarized the articles and gave my personal opinions about the topics.

I took Drew for my 115 class and enjoyed it. But the 121 class was nothing but pure confusion for myself and my classmates. We even asked him as an entire class to be more clearer and no luck. Very dissapointing

I am surprised his score is so low, i took his class last year, he has a phd in philosophy if that says anything so he takes a very unique approach for a writing teacher. I enjoyed class it was always strange and unexpected, essays were very open ended so it was hard to pick a subject, but he is all up for helping! I enjoyed his class very much!

IDIOT-Srange-Crazy-Obsessed with Native americans. He talked about Indians more than writing. He is just this really poumpas wierd guy that nobody likes, but everybody kisses A$$ for him. I told him some of my family had swine flu and so I couldn't come to class for one day. He said he hadn't heard anything about staying home cuz the swine flu.

I learned noting in this class,and I feel really bad for saying this but he is a horrible teacher.Asked him to clarify something for me and he changed his answer in the middle of it,then looked at me like i was stupid for not understanding him.Easy to pull a good grade,but don't expect to learn anything about writing.Very confusing teacher

I liked Drew's teaching style. Class discussion was a heavy point, and Drew would offer just enough to steer the conversation in the right direction. Such a refreshing change from the spoon-fed right-or-wrong approach from many teachers. More importantly, the syllabus develops strong writers (and readers) with Drew's sequence of assignments.

This is the only time I've rated a professor, and only in defense of Drew. I thought he was a fantastic teacher. A little strange, yes, but if you were motivated enough to actually work and go to his office once and a while, I thought he was great. The class discussions were great, and I still say hi to former classmates. Drew is a fantastic prof.

I'm still baffled by how this instructors hands-off, whimsically student graded, style is even passable to LCC. He doesn't teach or grade, literally. The class becomes it's own little mafia - everyone agreeing to give everyone else an "A" grade. He's the weak link in an otherwise great department.
