Gerry is a great teacher. I had him for Freshmen year and I still use what I've learned from him. Be punctual. Don't gouache the day before the class, but try to divide your gouaching time so that you can really learn from your assignment. Pay attention to what he says in crit. If you need any help, go talk to him. He'll give you lots of advices

My favourite studio in freshman fall semester. Gerry is crazy, but he's a sweet old man. My advice... do not do exactly what he says to do. Make up your own rules and make what you like. I learned so much from him in a short amount of time. He tells crazy stories and you'll be really lucky to have him. You'll work but you will learn A LOT!

I LOVE GERRY. Hated him at first--he confused me and was really harsh--but I ended up learning so much and he made me feel so proud of myself when i succeeded. His stories are amazing, I could listen to him all day. You'll be so lucky to get him.

very harsh to me in the beginning, but that motivated me to improve even more. believe in yourself. don't take his assignments too literally, he likes surprises and likes it when people break his rules. my favorite teacher at risd by far.

I didn't learn a single thing in his class. We did the same assignment all semester with little to no difference. Not only does he not care about what his students want in their art, his taste is completely capracious and he contradicts himself constantly.

My best advise for his future students is this: try not to take his assignments too literally. Don't do exactly what he wants, (except for dimensions and media,) just do something that YOU want. He seems very harsh in the beginning, but by the end he's fond of everyone, in one way or another.

There is some bizarre thing at RISD where its "cool" if you like the teachers who spit on you and your hard work. Immonem sucks. He doesn't care about you at all, all he cares about is the theatrics. If you are good at tacky illustration in gouache, then brush the sweat off, he'll like you. To the rest..sorry. He only likes his own taste in art.

Hated him and his stupid stories and sappy flowery subjects at first, then I looked up and had improved so much! Loved him and his quirkiness and absurdly acurate insight. It might not make much sense but trust, it will in the end. I miss him, the sweet old man. I kinda want to keep going to his class every week and learning color forever.

Speaks abstractly, appreciation for jazz & poetry, Tells stories that sometimes wander, but help draw you into the class and keeps us from getting cramped into our little world of guache panels. Loves Colors, hates greyscale, Kind &approachable, Sensei-like dictations may intimidate. Is capable of great rage & Passion, as well as calm sensitivity.

Gerry scared the bejesus out of me and made me cry, but I learned a lot from him and my work grew a lot under his tutelage. He's mysterious and intimidating, and speaks in fables, but he means well. Be authentic, engaged and committed and he'll be cool with you for the most part. Save up $$ for all the gouache.

Beware...gerry is not for the faint of heart. if you keep an open mind and put in an effort he will teach you a lot, but don't complain about the work. gerry taught me more than anyone freshman year, and you are lucky if you have him.
