She expects students to not have jobs to focus on school. Doesn't respond to emails until about fifteen minutes before class, yet expects students to check emails twice a day. Not clear in grading criteria. For final, asked true or false for open ended questions in the readings. Consistently "forgot" to upload assignments until the night before due

Dr. Giles is an intelligent woman who WILL make you work for a good grade. Her class is not one where you can just sparknote a reading, you have to actually know what's going on. BUT when you see the improvement youve made at the end of her class you'll know it's because she pushed you to be the best you can be.

Get ready to read and write a LOT and dont expect to boost your word count with fluff. This is not an easy A. If you want to grow in your close-reading and persuasive writing skills, this is the professor to take. Shes accessible if you need help, but you have to take initiative.

Get ready to read and make sure you read everything assigned and, don't interpret it as the author's belief but rather the author's critique. Don't take this class unless you absolutely need the credit hours.

Dr. Giles is a nice, understanding woman, but she can be inconsistent at times. She also is very strict on what she wants, but doesn't lay these terms out for you.

I've never hated a class this much. Although she claimed that hers isn't the only opinion, she will dock your participation points. Her grading is very unclear. Moodle is often not updated, and she will scream at you that the assignment was in the syllabus (but it isn't) and blames the class for her mistakes and lack of organization.

I've taken her for ENGL 1002 and ENGL 2002, and I still don't like her as a professor. She's very opinionated and annoying at times. Participation does count and she does offer extra credit for 2002. I would suggest you only take this class if its required because there is a lot of reading(textbook and novel) .

Make sure that if she calls on you that you do your best to answer in a regurgitate-y fashion. She doesn't do a good job of redirecting students' ideas on literature (e.g. she asks for your opinion on literature then tells you your idea is flat out wrong...) I always enjoyed her class though because of how knowledgeable she is in her content!

Really great and helpful. Very diplomatic and rationally open-mined. Grades very fairly. Gives students a chance to revise their essays, and urges them to come to her office for help!

Very few professors at the univeristy care enough about their subject to work as hard as Dr. Giles. If you want an easy A without any work, don't take her class. If you want to learn about literature and earn your grade, take every class you can with her. I think she's the best prof in the whole department.

This class is a difficult class but not impossible to pass. You must put the work and effort into it and Dr. Giles expects that of you. You get 200 points for participation and attendance. Also, she loves to help people, so if your having a hard time go to her office hours. I learned so much in this class. Do your work and you will do fine.

She knows her stuff, but she is way too hard! If you are only taking the class as a humanities elective, take ANYTHING or ANYONE else, because I spent all my time reading for this class. I did get an A, but I had to work to earn it. If you have her, MAKE SURE to ask questions, go to her office, etc. bc she values participation and effort.

She is very intelligent! She gives you plenty of time for assignments, and she always lets you know exactly what she's expecting. She is also willing to help whenever possible. She does have high expectations, but that's because she knows what her students are capable of. Looking forward to having her again next semester.

She's an extremely helpful teacher and will help you out so long as you do your part. The people who rate her poorly are the ones who never turned anything in or never went to class and expect her to be all nice and jolly at the end of the semester when it's time for her to give out grades.

I learned a lot about writing from her! She always had suggestions for improving. We had good discussions, and actually she encouranged people to talk to each other. The people who say she was forcing her ideas on them are probably the ones who wanted to force theirs on the rest of us.
