Prof. Florin is absolutely amazing, He clearly knows so much about geography and North Carolina and is eager to pass that knowledge along to his students. Highly recommend him to anyone wanting to learn more about North Carolina

Comment:

I took Florin for a FYS on the geography of voting and loved him! I looked forward to going to class because he is the sweetest and really cares about his students. He was into showing tons of maps so the material wasn't always super interesting, but his endearing and hilarious personality made the class worthwhile. Hope to take him again!!

Comment:

This man is a gift to UNC. He is so kind and is one of the only professors I had that didn't scare me or stress me out. He also really cares about teaching and his students and his material. He actually wants you to learn/do well. He can be disorganized but it never poorly impacts your performance/grade in class. God bless Jon FLorin.

Comment:

Dr. Florin is so amazing and kind. I found his lectures to be very contradicting to my own preconceived notions. The key is to listen to his lectures and take good notes since the material he discusses is on his exams. He does not give perfect grades for writing assignments unless you are God, but usually his highest for these assignments is a 96.

Comment:

Good class for gen eds. Lectures are boring but the main things to pay attention to for exams. The textbook is unnecessary, only the terms that he asks you to know are important. He had issues with technology/grades but it was fixed by students who contacted ITS for him. Also doesn't give 100s for the book review, 96 was the highest and few got it.

A good course to take for gen eds. He basically states what will be on the test and is very helpful during office hours. He want his students to succeed. However, he is not very tech savvy and doesn't always stick to the syllabus. He also wound up changing the grades so that they were all weighed the same. The curriculum was pretty random.

Comment:

Florin is one of the cutest old men EVER. He is a pretty monotone lecturer (making it difficult to not zone out or surf the Internet), but he sometimes cracked jokes that had me weak. I definitely had to take good notes in lectures and do all my textbook readings to do well on the tests, but I ended up learning a TON.

Florin is very nice and really loves what he teaches. He is sort of forgetful about things, but you can tell he really cares about what his students learn. All exams/quizzes are short answer but they're pretty much all based on his lectures. I never read the book and got an A, so I don't think it's necessary. Great guy, quirky, and funny too.

Florin is a pretty nice professor. He's old, so his fluency with technology is incredibly low (one time he accidentally erased everyone's paper grades, and deleted two weeks worth of inquiring emails on a separate occasion). That being said, he is still a good professor, and the class is very easy. You should be able to get by without reading.

I loved John Florin so much. He is adorable and I actually turned out to learn a lot on the geography of NC. I do recommend going to class because he lectures & it is important to listen for exams. He is funny, & makes jokes in class. He is not very techie techie which is quite funny. We had 4 exams and one paper. He is friendly & easy to talk to.

He gives a new meaning to the term granDADDY. He made my Monday Wednesday AND Friday. Go see him in office hours, he'll help you with anything you need ;) doesn't look a day over 75. Forreal tho, it was an enjoyable class and I would highly recommend taking any class with him.

Comment:

Florin is the grandfather you always wanted. As such, his technology skills are questionable, and he tends to bumble around a bit, pressing buttons and wondering why the computer doesn't work. The class was not the most exciting, but there was nothing unexpected, and the tests were not hard. Florin was also always excited to answer questions.

Professor Florin was definitely my favorite professor my first semester. Attendance is not mandatory but the tests are related to all the lectures. His exams are also very easy, but if you get an awful TA then your grade might suffer. I would definitely recommend this professor!!

Comment:

Florin has to be my favorite professors of all time. Geography sounds like a boring subject but I actually liked it. He is hilarious and a cute old man. His exams are not bad if you study his lectures. We had 4 exams this semester, short answer. Not a tough grader & if he sees you have interest he can raise your grade. Overall, loved him!

Florin is dope. If you show up to class you will get an easy A. All his tests are based off of his lectures. If you go to his office hours he can help you raise your grade and he sees that you're working hard he will give you an A. He's a very intelligent man and funny too.

LOVED Florin! He's the man. I would take him again, but he's semi-retired. He enjoys the material and you can tell. Sometimes says things that are semi-questionable, but ABSOLUTELY loved him! Would recommend again. Studied for tests reading the textbook only the night before, but I still showed up to class everyday though. Would take again 100%

This is my easiest class of my first semester it saved me. All the info you need for the tests are straight from his lectures and with a little studying its easy to get an A. He loves his job and likes to make jokes during class.

VERY easy class. Everything on the tests is in his lectures, so just take notes and pay attention, maybe skim the textbook for extra studying before the test. Much of what he talks about comes from basic history and current events of each region or physical geography (like mountains and rainfall). Papers are also easy to write and graded generously

Comment:

Definitely go to class. His tests are almost completely things he's talked about solely in class lectures. The book is helpful for more information, but not really information on the tests. Off-topic sometimes and a definite rambler. Must like the class!
