Best teacher ever. If you pay attention and study, tests are a piece of cake. He also grades extremely easy on short answers. Gives a lot of extra credit and is always willing to help you succeed in his class. I write down everything from his lectures, just study that a few hours before the test, and never received below an 87 on any test. Love him

Good teacher overall, lectures are somewhat boring because all he does is read off of power points. Tests are fairly easy if you study and do the study sheets. The amount of mastering biology assigned is overwhelming.

He is a nice guy, however he is not the best professor. His lectures are boring and his online quizzes are more like tests. I love Bio but he made it hard for me to enjoy it.

Really great guy. Very organized. You also know your grade and status throughout the semester... so no suprises whether your are failing or not. Tough subject but you'll learn a alot. Alves is pretty awesome.

Comment:

Reading the chapter before it was covered in class helped me a lot. Also regular use of blackboard study sheets helped me a lot. Many of the mastering biology questions showed up on his exams. The science journal and the extra credit points enabled me to earn a good grade. No complaints about gen bio, but genetics awaits :(

Avoid at ALL costs!!!! He doesn't care about the students. H e jsut reads the notes from his slides, doesn't teach the information. You NEED to study o.d. in his class. He rushes through the material, you spend alot of time trying to figure it out on your own.. Good Luck i noe I needed it.

I recommend going to class, however, he passes around a sign in sheet and puts the lectures online. His tests are really hard. Along with taking good notes, read the textbook. Take down any notes he gives on test review days - that is usually on the test. Very approachable and concerned if you need help.

He's really really nice, but his lectures are really, really boring. Luckily he has a weird sense of humor that can (maybe) keep you entertained. He also repeats things so you can write clear notes, and is fair about grades... he gives you good ones and you can opt out of the final.

Comment:

Doctor Alves is a mixture of ultimate bore and ultimate nice. You can definitely see that he's a great guy who know's a great deal about bio, but his lectures are sometimes hard to get through. The reason to take the class? Easy A and you don't really need the book. Just don't miss class and take good notes!! He allows you to skip the final.

I liked his class. It isnt easy or hard but he gives extra credit tests that bring up ur grade. He talks funny and is stuck in the 70's but very clear.
